Motorola Q Coming Sooner Than Expected
A hotly-anticipated smartphone is now expected to be out before the end of this year, not early 2006 as was originally thought.

In the tradition of the H/S Visor Edge, mainstreamed by the Moto RAZR, now makes it's way into the theSmartfone space. But, she's really ugly (imo) as compared to the RAZR or Treo which it seeks to compete with.
Stolen BB/Treo keyboard looks nice, but the artistic elements do not mix well in their design. Looks like the vision of the RAZR duct taped onto a Treo keyboard. They are both cutting edge designs, but mixing them looks ... frumpy.
Also, Moto wasted tons of frontal area that could have been maximized with screen real estate. Relatively tiny screen should give good battery life, but severely limits usefulness. Landscape begs for bugs and WM software mishaps.
Moto does have enough sense to dump the antenna, so kudos for that. WM Smartfone edition means no touchscreen support, right? If so, it aint a true smartfone in my book and will not touch the Treos or the SS i730 or i733.

Strange. My PR contacts at Motorola continue to claim this phone will not be out until early next year. They aren't even handing out review units until then.
Has anyone told Zander this yet?

rumors tell me GPRS only, not EDGE
I've also heard that it's going to be released with GPRS only, not even EDGE. If so, that's going to mean the death of the device (ok, that's a little drastic, but you know what I mean).

320x240 screen.
That is actually pretty clever. It's like a Pocket PC device flipped to landscape mode by default. The new HP phone and the Treo are both only went with 240x240 to fit the keyboard underneath, and that results in software compatabilities with some older programs.
If you have software incompatabilities on this device you could just rotate the screen back to good old 240x320 mode and run the older apps.
The only donwsize I suppose is it makes this device look really "fat".

The HP 6500 is 240x240, and the announced Treo700 with WM5 is 240x240, but it should be noted that the Treo650 is 320x320 !!
I think that perhaps fear of the Motorola Q beating them to market is why HP came out with the 6500 as a "gap filler", since they weren't ready with the 6700 (with WM5) yet...

Good: Size, shape, true QVGA, dual speakers, BT, 1.3MP cam, possibly EV-DO or EDGE.
Bad: Tiny screen that's still lower res than a Treo 650, odd button layout, no WiFi, non-standard SD.

Well, it does look a little more attractive in person, even tho it's not magnetic like the original RAZR. Still with the buzz going around about MS leaking out the 2nd WM5 Treo, I'm waiting on it.
PIC Discussion of the 2nd Treo

If that 800 is real and has a slide-out keyboard, I'm getting one - done deal.
If not the 6700, anyway.
