The Palm OS "look and feel" does not belong on a smartphone. Compatibility with the core OS, yes. GUI, no. The "look and feel" of the Palm OS was designed for a stylus-based portrait-mode PDA. Handspring had to bend over backward to rework the OS/GUI so that it could be optimized for a D-Pad and thumbboard usage. These guys just don't get it anymore, do they?

After using every smartphone under the sun at my company, i can say unequivically: Palm OS is the only GUI that belongs on a smartphone. I don't know what inside information you have - but core modification to the interface to allow d-pad control to the extent that the treo has could be done more easiely by PalmSource than by anyone else (including palmOne) - since they make the OS. D-pad integration on the treo is good for sure - but its not rocket science. PalmSource has stated that future versions will be more optimized for smartphones - i doubt they would pass over something as simple integrating Treo style d-pad support (though we have seen more stupid things happen.... so who knows?).
Let me just say - god i hate uiq. what a buggy, piece of crap interface on an otherwise ok os. and series 60 isn't hot either. The palm OS approach to interface is very clean and easy to use. Just make treo style d-pad itegration part of the OS and then we can get some decent phones from other manufacturers as well (without paying the huge price p1 charges for its devices)
