American market is too severe. Consumers can return things if they don't like. In a result, if company make just-a-ok products, people buy it for try and return it. But in Japan, it is different. It's like all sales are final. If you don't like it, that's too bad. You can get exchange if it's DOA but can't return it. So, Japnaese market is less risky to manufactures than American market.

Plus, in the United States, you have to advertise your product as well. Sticking it on a website and hoping that people will stumble upon the page is a pretty poor way to sell a device. The only times I've really seen Sharp's devices are when Brighthand announces them. After that, I never hear from them again.

Linux was the downfall ... too bad they didn't go with Pocket PC/Windows Mobile.

The SL-6000L only sold well after the price was dropped. Lately Sharp was in the American market in name only.

Or Palm OS.
While several Sharp devices have caught my eye, the fact that they run Linux was a huge turn-off. If they made devices with either PPC or Palm OS, they would have sold much better.

Palm had a device like it, it was CLI? PEG-UX50, its doa now too. I do agree the OS did have a magor limiting factor to its sales.

The UX50 was similar, but was missing some very important things that make the clamshell Zaurus models superior:
* Large VGA screen
* Portrait and landscape support
* CompactFlash slot
I agree that Sharp would have done a lot better in the U.S. with either the Palm OS or Pocket PC.
