No, it doesn't run the Tablet PC stuff. It's regular old WinXP.
And, BTW, it's *not* available now. You can pre-order now. Shipping is scheduled for the middle of next month, I believe.
I'll be impressed once I can run a fully-functional Linux or BSD install on it. Or , $deity forbid, Darwin with a nice window manager (I'm pretty used to getting around in Mac OS X/NeXTSTEP, so I can transfer that knowledge).
I hope that Palm gets a kick in the *** by this. It's clear from the recent Sony announcement and the OQO that the next wave of devices will be fully-capable ultra-mini laptops. Battery life will be no less limited than conventional laptops, and I personally think the time has come to kill the optical drive if we are to have any hope of moving forward with PC technology. The 5.25" CD format simply takes up too much power and space.
Too bad the OQO is missing USB 2.0 and real (read 6-pin) FireWire.
I still have hopes that Palm can take what they acquired from Be and add the multi-user capabilities, etc., that Be was never able to provide so that we can have a light-weight, commercial alternative to Windows for running on these types of devices. But I'm not holding my breath..
Actually, the OQO looks near-ideal for me. I need an x86 portable that I can carry around without too much of a burden (a Mac will always be my primary machine).

It does look pretty intriguing. But I'd have to eyeball this thing personally in a store before I'd lay down that kind of money. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it will be available at the local Best Buy any time soon In any case, $2000 sight unseen is a risky proposition IMO.

*sigh* This happens all too often. Everything OQO sent sent out today said this device is available. If you go to the OQO site, it says the model 1 is available. Only by actually ordering the thing can you find out that the company is taking pre-orders for something that won't be available for weeks.

Ed, actually you can just re-post the two years ago news about OQO, there is no change at all.
Still PRE-ORDER.

Yes, but will I be able to play Return To Castle Wolfenstein-Enemy Territory on it?
Seriously, that is an eye-opening piece of hardware.

When I thought OQO had actually released a product, I considered calling up Satan to ask if he was planning on opening ski lodge on the snowy slopes of Hell.

PC World has released a review of the model 1. They didn't have a lot of good things to say.

Who wouldn't want a full-featured PC the size of a PDA? That's the promise of OQO's long-anticipated Model 01 Ultra Personal Computer, a 14-ounce handheld device that runs a full version of Microsoft's Windows XP. Unfortunately, poor design decisions and sluggish performance make the Model 01 a better concept than an actual product.

Any more reviews like this and the unit will certainly fail. Which is too bad too because its got potential. Hopefully, development will continue to the point where they will be able to fix some of the problems - not just Oqo, but from other hardware developers too.
