palmOne Tungsten T5: Access Your Files in a Whole New Way
palmOne's Tungsten T5 will have some innovative features, including the ability to appear as a removable drive on any computer, but it will lack some of the features long-time Palm OS users have been hoping it would have.

Unfortunately, reality is just what was prognosticated. Too bad.
Did the palmOne spokesman give you any reason why they are taking the unusual step of announcing the new device before it would be available for sale? Was it due to the leaks?

Uh Oh...
Uh oh,
This could be the death knell for palmone. Every high-end competitor to the T5 in the pocket pc camp has dual wireless, feature upon feature more, for the same price. This T5 should have been the replacement for the Tungsten E. Not all people need all the features, but the masses would still prefer to have a feature and not use it, rather than not have it all, esp if the price was the same. The only thing saving palmone is now the palm os itself. Count palm as another company conquered by Microsoft. Hate to say it, but the writing's on the wall, in caps, bold, italics, etc etc etc. I think the 999th time that palm 's been declared dead is finally the time it's correct. I was waiting one last time to see what palm was going to do with the T5 before I totally jumped over to pocket pc, and now that I've seen it, I'm gone because it doesn't fit my needs for dual wireless and because I perceive the pocket pcs as a better value for the money now. and because I like to reward innovation. Maybe it's just me. But I doubt it.

Yes, it's all true. The sad terrible truth. Someone hand me a box of Kleenex so I can cry myself to sleep.

am i the only 1 whos tired of hearing about this magical OS "Cobalt"? but yet everytime a new device is announced it doesnt support it. the whole Palm scene is just getting very old to me. it just feels like my old favorite is dying. the whole PPC industry just really seems to outshine Palm in almost every manner, i wont even bother getting into the details because it will take to long

Heda,
Yeah, I have no freakin' idea what palmone is thinking. Who is running the business out there? They must know something that I don't, otherwise they wouldn't put out a model that is to me, business suicide 101. Are they planning their own demise? The only hope is that there is some new, entirely different device going to be released imminently so that the T5 is no longer meant to be the top fiddle. Then palm will be alright. But this T5 wouldn't be a huge deal if it were anything other than the T5. We've been waiting a YEAR for this. We've been waiting a year for a memory setup that is what pocket pc's have had for years: RAM + flash-rom that you can store files on. And didn't the clie ux-50 have this a full 1 year ago as well? The fact that top banana is such road smush spells trouble. They'd better whip out the plutonium 5 soon or whatever they have, because it's 4th and long for palm.

from the article:
"According to a palmOne spokesperson, there were several reason for this. For one, developing a new handheld takes a long time, and palmOne was well along in the creation of the T5 before PalmSource finished up work on Cobalt."
Now...When I remember correctly Cobalt was finished the beginning of this year. That would mean they started the development of the T5 before that....that must be december 2003 or january 2004 or something like that. I don't buy that...total crap.
The only thing they did was, after they decided it would be called T5, walking an other route through their warehouse. There was plenty stuff left over from the current E and T3 series.
