You actually said out all I want to say. Hx4700 is a great machine, but too many drawbacks, esp the footprint and touchpda.
I can't imagine going back to use a jornada 568 size PDA. I have 3 laptops and I never use the touchpad.

Mini-Tablet!
Whoa. That thing is huge. More like a small tablet device than a "handheld". After using one of the Sony's I realized how huge they were. This beast dwarfs the Sony in the pic! I'm sure it has usefulness for some, but for a hanheld to actually use and carry on a daily basis, it seems near worthless. I bet HP will sell a little wheeled cart to tote this thing through airports and such. :-)
I can't wait to see that big VGA screen tho. This will either sell to corporates with a specific need or folks who buy off the spec sheet.

Ed, have you tried PIE using VGA_SE, it seems to me that you have not tried that. Is there where the beauty of this machine is and I believe that you have missed that.

What?!?! A Jornada 560 series PDA is only...
(searching HP website)
5.20 x 3.01 x 0.68 inches (132 x 76.5 x 17.2 mm), whereas Hx4700 is at
(searching HP website some more)
5.17 x 3.03 x .59 inches...
...
Oh well, they are the same size...
Anyway, my main thing is:
Please don't add insults to our injuries by mentioning our beloved and discontinued PDA.
An Jornada 567 owner...

Just my fault, I am previous Jornada 565 and 568 owner, and love jornada so much.
Hx4700 has so much features from Jornada 568:
1. light detector
2. extra connectors in battary place for expansion
3. CF support
4. flip-cover
5. size, weight and price
6. record button and long-hold press button preset

You're right, I haven't put VGA_SE on it yet, but at this point I'm reviewing the device as it comes out of the box.
VGA_SE sounds really cool; I just wish it wasn't required.

In this point, you are absolutely right it's like MS and OEMs have not learned yet how to use the VGA at full. I was hoping that after a year using it in the e800 they were coming with something new in the hx4700 but Oops, they did it again...
I can tell you one thing once you tried the PIE or NetFront in real vga using VGA_SE you wont want to go back to QVGA

I wish VGA_SE was included in the OS and that you would not have to reset to change resolutions. I hope there will be a way to change resolution on the fly.

Is a Touchpad a good idea?
Hi all,
Great looking PPC but like websurfing, I question a touchpad interface on a PDA form factor--regardless of OS (Linux, Symbian, Palm, WinMobile or others).
For example, web-surfing. Webpages have more than an 8-1/2x11 screenfull of info (or more). To surf via any PDA makes sense when the website visited is optimized for a PDA screen rather than scrolling through an 8-1/2x11, 11x17, etc. website by PDA screenful. So, it is with this line of thinking, I wonder if a touchpad is a better suited for a laptop rather a PDA.
As such, can it be feasible to put a laptop-sized touchpad on a PDA--in other words, can you put a touchpad with the same dimensions as the ones on laptops onto a PDA?
Matt A.
