News that one of palmOne's competitors may be putting together a smartphone with many of the same features as the Treo 600 was enough to spook investors.

AG Edwards!
Geeeeesh. These stock analysts are about as accurate as the NORAD defense systems over New England on Sept. 11, 2001. Remember the tech bubble and the analysts BuySellHold recommendations in the days weeks and months leading up to and into the disaster? NONE of them predicted it b/c they all were making a mint on the frenzy and can't truly forecast anyway. One analyst I watched kept a "strong buy" rating on eTOYS from $85/shr all the way down to the sub $0.50 price before changing the rating to "sell". ... thanks a lot for the advice pal!
This is nothing more than the herd knee-jerking skittishly on news from analysts who are probably in the sack with million$ of $hares of Nokia BEFORE this "analysis" was released. They've now sold their shorts somewhere on earth and are richer for it. Meanwhile the heard wanders aimlessly in the dark with their 401(k) & pension a$$ets just hoping for market perform. Meanwhiile, the corporate sharks continue their feeding.
Nokia may yet squash little P1, but basing on some analysts statement is "junk-science" at best. Nokia better do some serious work to kill what seems near universally to be the most attractive smartfone on earth. Months, months and months may pass before anything ever hits the carriers too.
JMO :-)

Copy of a copy of a copy?!!?
Treo Killer? First of all, instead of trying to copy the Treo, why doesn't Nokia try to copy the and kill the original instead, namely the RIM Blackberry! I mean this whole thing is ridiculous. The Treo 600 may be the leading smartphone platform in NA right now, but even with that stellar performance, sales of the Treo pale in comparison to Rim's BB sales. If anything it is the BB that is the real target P1, Nokia etc should be focused on...
Anyway, as I've stated else where, I think the Series 60 platform is a pure excuse for this type of device. A UIQ interface with touchscreen and Treo form factor would be much more appealing imo...

Something that just came to mind when I was reading this:
If Nokia is making a Treo killer, chances are that it will not kill the Treo but further it. Unless they can put a Treo600 in a $200 before contract shell, it will not happen. They will also have to make the idea of a smartphone work with their audiences. Also, the NGage debacle does not give me much confidence in what Nokia can pull off. Too often, they remind me of a Pontiac Grand Am, nice car but so muhc body cladding that it performs like a bar of soap in the desert. Nokia will have to have an extremly efficient design, and a better interface than the PalmOS and one handed nav and a low price, for it to succeed. But that is just my opionion, I dont work for those folks (though if they are hiring, I do have a PR degree and much computer experience)

Actually, sales of the Treo 600 have been quite good in Europe.
Nokia will come out with a Treo 600 killer about the same time the Treo 650 comes out. D'oh!

Good point. My last Nokia was my last Nokia... literally. We still use them at work, but I only do so to keep from using my own minutes. I got tired of comments like "where are you? you sound like a tin can", or "Can you call me back on another phone? ". It was OK for data and had more features than any phone I owned to date, but was a very poor telephone.

No, it hasn't sold well in Europe at all. This eWeek article goes into the details:
