Well... maybe I am too picky here, but the original story on "Om Malik on Broadband" says:
But those familiar with the company say it was because Sony was worried about the direction Palm was taking with its products. They were worried about Pocket PC and its traction in the PDA business, while Symbian OS grew more popular with the smartphone set.
Palm? What Palm? There hasn't been a company named Palm for a while now. Brighthand interpreted this as "PalmSource", which is presumably what the original author meant... but I'd expect a bit more precise wording from an acclaimed tech journalist. Doesn't inspire confidence in the correctness of the overall story.
And of course, there are other things to wonder:
"We're watching closely to see how PocketPC develops, and also how the Symbian world unfolds," a Sony exec was recently overheard as saying.
Oh really? I'd bet everyone in the handheld market, or on the sidelines, is watching how the PocketPC develops. And of course Sony is looking how the Symbian world unfolds -- they are part of it with their SonyEricsson joint-venture.
So really, what makes this blog entry newsworthy? ;-)

Sony may go Symbian to cash in on pay as you go infrastructure.
A Sony PPC would be awsome, especially given the killer hardware specs of the latest crop of high end PPC handhelds.

Do you think that if this does happen it could mark the beginning of a slow death for Palm OS? Caught between Windows Mobile and Symbian? What are the possible implications of such a move by Sony?

if Sony were to come into the PPC world...I'd certainly consider them just on the premise that the device would be pretty impressive...considering what u see with their Vaio line. The best part is it would just be hardware...not as many software usability issues....

as long as they didn't try to force the memory stick on us, I think Sony would make an outstanding PPC

yes, you are right bro, if Sony can make a TH55 model in the pocket pc world minus the memory stick and with dual slots, I think that I would buy that product.
The thing that makes Sony not so good is their insistence on using the the memory stick and then they kept changing the memory stick format and hence undermining the value for the customer who had brought the previous format.
Well just me....

24va - I agree 100%!
If they are going to have memory stick slots then I sincerely hope Sony DOES NOT enter the PPC market. With one of those slots, I'll NEVER buy one of there PPC's regardless of how good the rest of the package is. It's the one thing that has me avoiding Sony products like the plague.

Sony with Symbian? No!
I dont think Sony will ever release handheld with Symbian OS in it.
If Sony did that, then it will have two similar products with similar functionalities and similar price (of course - its a Sony)....
I never heard a Clie being a smartphone (that usually Symbian ships in). If Sony persists using Symbian it will 'crash' the other product line.... remembering Sony Ericsson?
Series P9xx from Sony Ericsson is getting closer and closer to PDA functionality whereas Clie never have a 'complete' wireless solution. Thats why we never see any Clie with GSM/GPRS wireless. It will combat directly with P Series from Sony Ericsson.
I think most top management at Sony realize this. If they ever release 'Clie Symbian OS (Smartphone)', those engineers from Sony Ericsson will against the plan seriously.
If Sony release PPC handhelds it should address serious compatibility requirement problem from Microsoft. Microsoft are very strict regarding the hardware specification to form a Windows Mobile handhelds. They should have a serious talk with Microsoft if they still want to implement Memory Stick Media format in their handheld.
