All I can do is repeat what's in the article:

The Atheros AR5005G features new signal processing technology that extends the battery life of mobile devices by dynamically adjusting power consumption in response to system and network activity. This technique delivers up to 98 percent lower power consumption than multi-chip WLAN solutions on the market today.

Do most handhelds today take full advantage of 802.11b's speed? Because I've heard that many handhelds are pretty slow when it comes to web surfing. If that's the case, then what's the point of using 802.11g?

802.11b is already faster than any data transfer you are going to get on the Web, so unless you are transferring data between your handheld and your computer, you'll see no advantage. Still wirelessly HotSyncing/ActiveSyncing will get a lot faster.

As has been said before in other threads the big advantage of 802.11g on PPC is that if you are sharing access with say a laptop that has 802.11g then you can still get the fast access with the laptop.

If you have PPC with 802.11b, then your wireless network will slow down to 802.11b speeds for all other devices that are accessing the net.

I think 802.11g for PPC is great - provided of course the power consumption is not much higher.

DanielTS - you got me drooling. I've been waiting for what seems like FOREVER for a 22xx series with WiFi. MAN I hope it has SD and CF slots and VGA and BT and ...
GRRR - I just saw date of article May 2003. Old news. Sigh.

54G may not improve speeds on PPC, but it does mean I don't have to set my router to broadcast b & G signals. If I can leave my router set to G only.....the rest of my WiFi usage should be better right? That is the benefit I am wanting!!!
