Arrow Electronic Ink Ebook Reader Debuts in Japan

Sony's LIBRIe is the first device to use the Electronic Ink display developed by E Ink Corporation and Philips Electronics. Other devices using this type of screen are expected to be available in the future.

I am REALLY interested in seeing how this device and technology do. The idea of having a display that takes very little power is great.

I have been using Palms and PocketPC for reading for some time now but I can't get my wife to use them for reading.

I think something like this might appeal to her more. If the display looks a lot more like regular print and it is thin I think that might be enough to convince her.

Now we just need enlish versions.

"All the ebooks for this device come from Sony. They are only about $5 each, but expire after 60 days."

Typical SONY.

Sounds great and I hope Palm Digital Media can license its reader and DRM on a unit such as this (it of course won't be Sony, but someone else will duplicate what they've done in short order).

Myself, I prefer having everything on one unit and thus prefer to read my eBooks on my T|3. I would however consider this if there was a way to beam a Palm Digital Media book on my Palm over to this unit and vise versa.

Here's what my buddy Eugene in Japan had to say:
Quote:
Couldn't resist, I bought the e-Book reader which was released today. When I first saw the demo unit, I thought it was a mock up unit because it looked like paper and was not a "screen" that I was expecting. I was mentally complaining that this shop did not put a live demo unit. As I was about to leave, I saw someone pressing the buttons and the screen changed. Then I realized that it was a real unit. I must say the bigger screen size coupled with the E INK is very comfort for the eyes.

I'm just hoping someone comes up with a hack to allow you to read ASCII and HTML files (at the very least).
