Palm One has unmitigated gall to continue to sell a 160 x 160 resolution product, designed by Handspring 4 years ago, today.
Why Sony and Motorola and Nokia can't see that it is the fact that its got a keyboard and Palm OS as its two strenghts to keep the lead market share is way beyond me.
I mean Sony in
www.mobileburn.com is stuffing little cars into the bottom of cell phones...what is that?
No, the Treo does not have leadership in the hanheld market because it has 160 x 160 circa 1999 low res screen, NO wifi, NO BT, NO voice recorder and the worst 300K camera out there.
And to hear the chairman of Palm One say that they are going to come up with a PPC version...Oh My God, how can they compete with what is out there being announced?
I'l tell you how: the keyboard IS important. Palm OS is great. Symbian sound like a bad choice of date at the Star Wars cantina. Palm OS gives you 20,000 programs. PPCs well you know can Gates get any richer? And hogging precious resources, Windows software is still tricky.
The chairman is not competing on the LACK of hires, the LACK of BT, the LACK of WIFI, the LACK of voice recorder and the LACK of a functioning camera!
Why I'm I writing this? Well, for one if you promoted ME to Chairman of Palm One I'd hire a Junior EE major at MIT and put a 320 x 320 screen in that device in 30 minutes a la Swordfish. The Chairman is now saying the Treo people will have to stay with 160 x 160 till 2005. Oh My God!
For two, I'd commission a 512 Meg card with Wifi and BT and ship it with the $ 600 product.
Hey Sony, drop Symbian on the P line, get Palm OS, put a keyboard on that unit and boom you got leadership in the Smart Palm market. Stop putting cars in the business end of cell phones. Its embarrasing.
And to have all the carriers in the USA run to sell a $ 600 160 x 160 device? I'm ready to volunteer for service in Iraq man, at least there they have an excuse for not having a smart device with a keyboard and 320 x 320!
Sony can you hear me? Sony can you hear me?
