I hate the idea of yet another standard - but i have been hoping for something like this that would bridge the gap between handhelds and the desktop. Floppies need to be done away with - but existing usb keys annoy me with the fact that they are so close to getting it right but dont work on other devices. its absurd what i have to go thru with my palmOne device to move files from the device to the pc (or the opposite). I dont want more clutter in the form of a 5-7 card format reader (i'll only use sd). I dont want a silly piece of plastic attached to my pc via a usb embilical chord. i dont want to pay more $$$ for something that my palm should do well to begin with. i should just drop the palm in the cradle and have it viewed as a removable drive (and it should allow access at speeds faster than CardExport). BUT if i dont have a palm cradle, i want to just pull the media from the PDA and plug it in. the current situation shows no forsight and is out of touch with how people actually use these standards/media. now sd has taken off- great. its just that it is a pain to use and people shouldnt have to buy a seperate reader.

i am not sure about this standard. i doubt pdas will adopt this anytime soon (if at all). for now - the best would be a USB key with a USB connection on one end, and removeable sd on the other (ie a very small usb dongle sd card reader). heck maybe this exists? let me know if any of you know of such a device.

I have a card reader (not external - hate those. Its in the drive bay). But this doesn't amount to squat when i go to take files to other systems. Maybe the real solution is to have PC manufacters drop the useless floppy drive (i still see them out there as standard configuration) and replace it with a card reader. Again - they are cheap for anyone who cares can get one - but thats no good when you go to another system. Make SD/CF/MS reader THE standard for removeable media on all preconfigured desktops. That makes more sense than this new format.

60MBps is pretty impressive (it is only the theoretical speed, while 40-50MBps is more realistic), and would be great in digital cameras. For example the Canon 300D wouldn't have to pause after you take a few pictures because it won't have to write to the memory card anymore. (which it can only shoot at 2.5fps for a maximum of 4 shots due to slow memory cards)

LexarMedia JumpDrive Trio, $20. Pen drive/card reader combo that handles SD, MMC, and MS formats. USB connector on one end, card slot (and cover) on the other. Acts as a pen drive using the card for the memory and does not require drivers in most newer Windows computers. Comes with a USB extension cord for computers with awkward connections.

I LOVE mine (can you tell?) Since my camera also uses SD cards, i can pretty much seamlessly transport data between my home, work and laptop computers, Palm PDAs, and camera. Its fun to take a movie on the camera and watch it almost instantly on the bigger PDA screen!

We don't need another memory card format! MS and SD are good enough for me, thankyouverymuch!
