Default 802.11b/g/a

It seems there's a problem with the faster 802.11g equipment. If a 802.11g access point has a 802.11b client in range that it's exchanging packets with, it drops all sessions down to 802.11b standard. It seems it can't sustain two different data rates. This is the case for Cisco access points, and may be true for all manufacturers.

A better solution is to go for an access point that supports 802.11b and 802.11a (54Mbps) as both speeds can be used together. However 802.11g clients will only be able to connect at 11Mbps.
