Symantec Debuts AntiVirus for Handhelds

Symantec will soon release several applications designed to protect both Palm OS and Pocket PC handhelds from viruses, worms, and other malicious code. However, there's some question about whether applications like these are necessary.

They already tried this a couple of years ago. It flopped big time. Since their last venture, PDA virii have increased by a whopping 0%

I've never been impressed with Symantec's PC based software...it's very expensive, invasive and can noticeably slow down even the fastest PC.

I'd really hesitate to put their software on my Palm...only as a last resort if they're weren't better AV solutions available.

Good to know there are tools available, but I think I'll wait and see, AFAIK there are no known viruses for PPC neither Palm.

Since these checkers tend to check for virus signatures, I'm curious what they're checking for.

Symantec aren't the first, Network Associates also have a product here. As others have pointed out, I don't know what it protects against at this point in time.

I wonder if PDAs will be a real target. Smart mobile phones would be easier especially as they are constantly connected, and the newer ones can run Java.
