Any info about a PalmOS version of these apps? This would certainly be cool on a new Tungsten C....

That'll look pretty funny. Speaking to your PPC like it's a walky-talky.

Question

Is there a way to make free calls with such apps? WI'm not quite sure sure how this works. Why does one have to pay a company for this?

One has to pay a company for this because they took the time and effort and paid their employees to create this software. It is called "capitalism" - Look it up.

The basic version of the software is free, and it's free to make calls to other people using a free network of voice over IP (VoIP) setup.

There is a service that lets you make calls to anywhere in the world from a computer to a phone for $.01 a minute or something. It's in the story's links. I am not sure of the details as I read it hurriedly, but it sounds neat.

I could ditch my daytime cell phone minutes if i was near any wifi connection and use PPC, that's be pretty sweet.

actually that's the whole point of Voip, to provide enterprise user with wireless voice capability. Apparently they got sick of paying wirelss phone bill too, specially since most of them has internal phone system ane network.

Mainly this interests me because I'm trying to avoid using a local phone AND a cell phone, so this would let me use that $.01/min plan from my house during the day (I doubt I would run up more than a few dollars a month), but also because I have some good friends who end up in Europe for school for a while, and it is CHEAP international calling.

Cool stuff, either way.

Capitalism: An economic system based on private ownership of capital...

I want to pay for each email I send on the web, too!!! Instant messages too, while wer're at it. Hopefully companies can start charging customers for every email they send since they need to be compensated for the time and effort and pay their employees to create the software.

- If it's for the software, I could understand paying a set fee for the product ($50, for example), not a usage fee. M$ doesn't (yet) charge users based on the amount of time they use their software.

Jamyl - you don't have to pay for the software - they have a free version that is not much different than the pay version (a few very nice added features in the pay version though). The only way you would have to pay for using this is IF you wanted to phone a real "phone", and then you are paying a service provider to allow you access to their infrastructure thereby giving you the ability to make such "calls".

I hope that makes a little more sense now...
