Default My Samsung E4GT is here, activated, and rooted!

It's been a fun evening. My first impression is good, but I have a lot to learn and get used to. I still have a lot of customizing and configuring to do. I installed an anti glare screen protector and a simple case that has a kick stand. I should probably try to get some sleep.

Sorry Jig, but I just couldn't have a phone where I need a full sheet of paper to write the name on! LOL!

JK! Glad you finally got home to rescue your new toy from your son! Look forward to hearing about it.

My first thought about this phone: is it too big?

It's very light and thin, but boy is it big. I bought a fairly thin plastic case that covers the back and sides. With the case on it, it's a bit thinner than my Palm T|X, a bit narrower, but it's a 1/2 inch taller. A half inch!! And to think I was kind of interested in the Palm Veer.

Okay, okay. So the TP2 wasn't exactly a dainty little phone. The E4GT is the lightest of these (comparison) and by far the most powerful. I'm used to using a belt holster, but I'll probably carry it in my pants pocket. This will mean a radical shift -- my wallet will have to share the same pocket as my keys. I'm too old for this kind of adjustment!

Rooting was easy once I found instructions I felt I could trust. The post includes a video tutorial, which helped immensely. I won't flash anything for a while.

I installed my 32GB class 4 Sandisk microSDHC card, but haven't transferred anything to it yet. No rush.

I've installed a few critical apps and have configured most of them. I have yet to purchase Titanium Backup since the free version has been sufficient, but I'll reconsider that, now. I installed Ad-Free. I think those are the only 2 that require root. Other apps are Cozi (online family calendar), Dolphin HD, Netflix (seems to work well even at 3G speeds), Google Reader, ReadItLater Pro, Speed Test, Tapatalk, and Voice+ (Google Voice callback).

It's going to take me a long time to get familiar with the launcher. It's pretty cool the way it works. I might like it better than ADW Launcher EX. Maybe.

I have many choices for office suite: Polaris Office (pre-installed), Documents to Go (full version), Office Suite Pro 5, and Quickoffice Pro. It's funny I have them all when it's not something I generally use on a mobile device, but it's nice to have.

I paired my BT keyboard, Microsoft Mouse 5000, and Sony Erickson MW600 stereo headset. I can use them simultaneously!!! very

The screen looks great, although I'm disappointed with the anti-glare screen protector. It's okay and I'll use it (and the 2nd one) as long as they survive, but I'll definitely look for clear glossy protectors. I prefer my devices naked, but I've heard a lot of reports of scratches and since this will live in my pocket, I think it's the right thing to do. The case doesn't add much bulk and I like the kickstand, but I'm still debating whether it's really necessary. I'll probably pop it on and off depending on my mood.

The device is as fast as advertized. Even at 3G speeds, web apps load quicker and browsing is very nice. There are some nice features with the stock browser, but I'll probably use Dolphin HD as my primary. I haven't looked at the browsers SGosnell was recommending, but might do that later.

That's all for now! Time to chase the kids and do my chores.

    Jig,

    Congrats on the new phone!

I'm a big big fan of Ghost Armor - I've been using it for years. This summer when we got our 3 Samsung E4g phones - the first thing I did was to go to the Mall & have Ghost Armor installed, (just on the screens). I even had my entire HPTouchpad covered (that was little pricey).

I know that there are some other products out there and depending on your state - what's available. You can install it yourself - but I just pay the $5 to have it installed.

Thanks for the suggestion, scjjtt. Even though they're not ideal, I hope the screen protectors I have will last a few months. I'll keep my eyes out for Ghost Armor.

I just purchased Titanium Backup Pro. Silly I waited so long.
