    Default teacher software recommendations

I am sure this is a kind of question that might have been asked and answered many times. However I performed a search in the forums' database but found nothing special.

    So, here goes my question.

I am a public school teacher and I would be happy if you recommend some good teacher programms for my T|T2.

I need only the basics. Not a day planner or a lesson planner. I have other programms for those

    I only need a "gradebook" with classes->students->grades (Tests/Assingments)

I would be especially happy if there is also a "freeware" application that does all that!

    thanks for your time.

This is not free....but is a pretty cool device for presentation purposes. It connects your Palm to an LCD projector and you can display Power Point (etc) presentations directly from your Palm. I have it for my TC.

Why not use the built in Microsoft Excel program? Seems like that would do a great job as a grade book. It is a part of Documents To Go.

thanks all of you. I was using Excel (with DocsToGo) which works well and then I tried "teachersPET" which didn't impress me. That is why I asked here if there is a neat and simple and cheap solution...

but then I just found out that I might create a large database with students, classes, lectures, tests, assignments and grades.

So I think SmartList2Go or HanDBase will help me create what I have in mind. Might not be as simple but in the years to come I will have a large DB with all my "teaching-life" even if it costs me a bit more.

    thanks again for your help..

PS: what do you think of this "concept", btw?

I think SmartList2Go is the best tool for class management.

If you develop in Filemaker Pro, you can do a pretty good job of updating students' progress in the field using Filemaker Mobile. It has limited use while on the handheld; (field types are limited to text, date and number, you have no drop-down lists), but you can add data during classes and synchronise with your desktop and network using a real conduit.

yes, but when you have many classes and students and assignments and tests, then you need something more complicated, no?

The desktop Filemaker-pro can be as complex as you like. What you use on the handheld is just one of the related Filemaker Databases at a time. (You'd call a Filemaker Database a single "table" in other database management systems).

So what you miss out on with your handheld are fields from other related databases, (queries) and calculation fields, (eg you see dates of birth, not student's age calculated from today's date). This is a gripe with many Filemaker Mobile users: you have to open the other tables separately.

But the other tables are still there and you can indeed have a large number of records with up to 50 fields. And yes, it does *synchronise*, not just import, with your sophisticated desktop solution.
