Palm, PPC, or Apple?
Hello, I have been using palm for five years. I spent two years on a Zire 32, then two years on a tungsten e2, and now one year on a TX. I abandoned the first two for hardware/software failures, and now I've almost had it with the TX digitizer. I am tapping at the extreme lower edge of the screen, and it registers ON THE KEYBOARD SPACE KEY!
I also have a large dead (as in does not register under any circumstances) spot in an important screen place. My question is this: should I put up with the aggravation of sending it back (I have the extended support) to get it fixed, or ask for my money back. If the second, I could really use a reccomendation as to what device I should buy. I wouldlike something with simmilar price and features, but that doesn't die every year. also should I go with PPC (I am currently running windows XP) or iPhone/iPod touch?
I could really use some advice on this; I use my palm quite often.
Thanks, Redwood13

Re: Palm, PPC, or Apple?
One thing you can look at to help you make your decision is to think about the programs that use use frequently now on your palm and then do a little research to se if they have those titles for the other platforms. I use an ipaq 210 and I love it. I have used wm for years. My wife has an older treo 90 and I am ot really into palm too much.
I prefer to have my phone separate which is why I have a non phone device. Somethng else for you to think about.
The new ipod touch has or will be coming out and it looks sweet. I would consider getting one of thoise if I did not have the ipaq.

Re: Palm, PPC, or Apple?
Have your digitizer replaced with a glass one by usedpdaparts.com. Forget about the extended support as it's slow and you will likely get a reconditioned TX that wasn't your original unit. At one time devices came with glass digitizers, which retain accuracy much longer but are prone to shattering if improperly handled. Should you go the glass digitizer route, back pocket is an absolute no-no and a good case is strongly advised. Flip cover doesn't cut it for protection.
If you choose to consider a different platform, consider carefully which applications are most important to you. The PIMs on Apple are lightweight compared to PalmOS, more screen taps on WM/PPC and you must own Outlook to sync either Apple of WM/PPC to your XP box. Do your homework on third-party apps.DT Lives in SFO...away from flying objects.

Re: Palm, PPC, or Apple?
Well...I have a T|X and 'touch wood' it is working fine as of now. I also have a Win Mob device - surprise! It's a Palm too - the Palm 750, which I love! My computer is XP-based, and I have not had a problem with any of the three devices yet.
I have often been tempted to opt for the iPhone - but could never really justify the cost - the Palm Treo works well as both an organizer and a phone and (this is important for me) as a modem.
Often, while on the road, I have paired my laptop with my Treo; I have also paired the T|X with the Treo and they have all got along with each other!
I know what I have mentioned above may not be a direct response to your query, but I thought it may help you to know that I have stuck with Palm and have not had any problems.
Now, and this is a very personal thing, what would I do if I were in your shoes?
As you said you are under warranty. So while I would be tempted to send the Palm back (after all, you have paid good money for it), I would seriously consider replacing the digitizer with a glass digitizer, which (as a number of threads on this forum suggest) is more 'stable' that the one that comes by default.
BUT...I would also get a phone/pda (my preference is of course the Treo - though I don't quite like the looks of the Treo Pro, which was recently released even though it has wifi).
Strictly speaking, as mentioned above, I would have a problem with the iPhone/ iPod not because of anything else (they look super and while I have not used them, their seem to do their designated job well - well! aside from the recent 3G release which I believe has been fixed with a recent update - not sure about this though), but because of the price to function ratio.
Good luck on your decision!
Cheers!
Edit: Whoops! Dick Tracy beat me to it - re: the glass digitizer! One other point that he mentions is critical - the compatibility of apps, the OSs of the handhelds and you base computing OS (which in your case is XP). The Apple universe is a different one - but one which CAN (with some exceptions, I think) be translated into the Win universe. But it IS a hassle sometimes. So, there is a lot of thinking to do in terms of which collection of devices you want to go with!Last edited by kristalsoldier; 09-12-2008 at 04:16 PM. Reason: As above

Re: Palm, PPC, or Apple?
Dick Tracy: Thanks for the note on Outlook. The extended support is actually an Amazon payment plan, I.E. I send it back and they send me a check. Thus, I don't like the idea of voiding it, in case something else happens. (I've already had three hardware screwups and two software on various devices.) You say the iPod apps are "light." Compared to a TX, how light? at most, all I need is Calendar, checklist, notes, a contact list, and a calculator. I know all those are available for Apple, but how good are they? Also, does anyone know how reliable the iPaqs/iPods are? Right now I'm not very happy with palm over the lack of development, digitzer loop (arghhh!!) and screwy waranty (I have a year's warranty, but to send it in I have to pay for a phone call?) kristalsoldier, thx for the advice. I probably won't go with a phone right now (I don't really need one and it's out of my budget )
Am taking the Apple advice under consideration.
