Lightbulb Why. Why? Why! Why Palm? Why Pocket PC?

Why Palm? Why Pocket PC? Here is a little "Profiling" system you can use to think about your PDA tendencies. This is totally subjective Just a little language to describe human intuition.

Short version. "Because I like it better."

Long version: "Because the rewards exceed my effort to use the specific tool to actively manage a process."

What are the Rewards? Each of the following typically shift independantly of one other.

Social: Self expression that is sociably accepted, encouraged, or conceivably, even glamorous. This is the herd, or clique, mentality.

Management: Satisfaction of effectively managing your participation in work and play. This is REAL WORLD success.

Learning: Satisfaction in mastering a new tool in which you have made an investment in money and hope.

What are the Efforts? Each of the following typically have a bearing on the others.

Modeling: Intellectual effort of anticipating the cause-and-effect of each feature and the cost/benefit of new software and accessories.

Effort: Physical Effort to keep the #$@% machine/accessories often enough to acheive the aforementioned awards.

Disappointment: Emotional attrition from broken machinery and dysfunctional software.

Attrition: Emotional attrition from the constant mental and physical activity required to use the device and it's software on top of the actual task.

If you think about these seven points, you can "profile" your self/PDA combination in numbers from 1 to 10 for each category.

    My profile for my IPAQ 3650 is: Social=5, Management=8, Learning=8, Modeling=2, Effort=3, Disappointment=2, Attrition=5.

Interpretation: I enjoy machinery and software for it's own sake, even when I don't have to use it to for REAL WORLD tasks. I prefer cool-looking machines. I enjoy the extensible, scalable features. I've had pretty good luck with my ipaq over all, but I did get a replacement for screen dust. Day-in, day-out, I find the PocketPC a little tiresome to use.

    Py profile for my Palm M505 is: Social=3, Management=8, Learning=5, Modeling=2, Effort=3, Disappointment=1, Attrition=5.

Interpretation: I like Palms - used them for years. They're not very chic; every other worker bee on my train has one. I've never had any problems with a Palm, but they're so bone simple, it's just no fun. I never liked the small, rough screen; all the scrolling just bugs the crap out of me.

Check out the excel file and make your PDA Radar profile. (it was scanned for viruses and uses no macros)
