Unhappy cannot hotSync my Palm z22

I have loved using my palm z22, but its pretty useless to me if I cannot sync it.

It used to work fine! (I run Windows XP and Palm os version 4.1.1).

Now when I try to sync I get: "The connection between your device and the desktop could not be established. Please check setup and try again."

I checked setup - it seemed fine.
I followed the instructions on the Palm website, even installing Palm 6.2.2, and losing some records in the process. The only thing I haven't tried is changing cables - I only have one.

    Any advice?

Which USB port are you using on your computer?

They are not all created equally.

Recommend using USB0 which is on the back of your computer, connected to the motherboard.

glad4, please, before going any further, undo your Palm Desktop upgrade. Version 6.2 is rather intended for Windows Vista. You are better with the previous.

FWIW, as you don't mention anything else about the cable, lemme tell you that the HotSync cable for the Palm Z22 is a common USB to mini-USB cable. You can use any that has come along with a camera, or whatnot.

Thanks Hal! I will promptly work to "x" the new download. I wonder if I can find the old files it stored someplace?

Also, discovered since my original post, that my ext. hard drive had same cable. Tried that in same usb port, with no better success. Maybe I'll try that in another usb port.

UPDATE! System Restore & using original software disk have not gotten rid of the Palm Desktop Access

    Hello?
Is there a way for me to remove the download without losing all my data?

glad4, sorry for the delay. Get to the folder in your C drive where the Palm Desktop is kept: just called Palm, and you'll find a sub-folder with your HotSync name. That's where your data is stored. BTW, did you only sync to Palm Desktop, or did you sync to Outlook?. OK, copy that folder elsewhere (but remember where you copy it to), and do a Control Panel delete: get to the Control Panel, click on the icon called "Add or Delete programs", find Palm Desktop and kill it. If the uninstall chimes in with an option of "keeping personal data or delete it", choose keep. Do a system restart. Now you'll be able to reinstall the other, older version. Please do up to this progress and come back to this thread

Thanks for getting back to me, and I apologize for being anxious!

1)The "Palm" does not show up in my "C-drive", but I did find a "Palm OS Desktop" folder in "My Documents".

    2) I'm pretty sure the Palm 6.2 is located in my "desktop" folder - I just completed removing it (via "Add or Delete") and am doing a system restart.

2)I think I only had the option of syncing to one, so I chose Palm. I am using Outlook express for email... it might be nice to mesh them?

I'll let you know how the re-install goes.

    Hi Hal,
Two bumps in the reinstall road:
    1) The install process said it couldn't connect to the internet; directed me to check my connection and try again. I did this multiple times, with both a Firefox and IE browser open. So I finally completed the install without the internet updating.

    2) The Palm Installshield Wizard says "congratulations! Your software was installed successfully" and asks me to synchronize the handheld. I plug in the cable, then the Z22: the desktop recognizes new hardware and then tells me it has been installed successfully, BUT when I hotsync I still get the handheld message that "the connection between the device and desktop could not be established".

    Hmmmmm.....
