Default Can the Z22 be used as an electronic Dictionario?

Hey, I am looking for a PDA where I can upload electronic dicitonaries and use it for my studies where I need to translate a lot....I have never had a PDA, therefore I would like to hear your opinions, can the Z22 be used for that, or do I have to infest more in a fancy PDA?

Does anybody know if these software packages (dictionaries) for Palm are good?

    Thanks for your help

    Hello Kandyan, welcome to Brighthnad!

There are many, many dictionaries available for PalmOS devices. Some of them are quite good. I use and am very satisfied with RoadLingua dictionaries, but I've tried some published by Beiks and they also look very good. You can find talking dictionaries, thesaurus, and a lot of other reference material, such as encyclopedias.

The Z22 can be used as a dictionary with any of these (or other) packages, but the problem is that the Z22 has small storage memory, and no expansion capabilities. The Z22 has only 20MB of user-available storage memory, and some dicitionaries are really large. For example, my RoadLingua English dictionary takes up 15.3MB, and my Spanish dictionary 8MB. Only these two would more than fill up the Z22's memory, leaving no room for other dictionaries or programs.

You're right in thinking you may need to invest in a fancier palm model. Perhaps the Tungsten E2 is right for you: it has slightly more storage memory (26MB user-accesible), but it can use SD cards up to 1GB, meaning you can store a lot of data. Also, the E2 has BlueTooth, which may prove handy once you start to get used to a Palm, and a hi-res screen (320x320 pixels), as opposed to the Z22's lo-res screen (160x160 pixels). This means images and text will look much better on the E2 than on the Z22.

    Hi, thanks for the answers...
I was looking a bit on the net, and I came across smartphones. Some of them have a keyboard which I think would be really useful since I want to use it as a dictionary and will need to type in a lot of words.

I saw the Palm Treo 680, and it sounds good and the price is right
It runs on the Palm OS Garnet operating system v5.4.9....do u think it's a good choice for what I have in mind with it. Could I install dictionarios there?

And, I still have one more question abou the use of internet, to use it I need a sim-card that supports that, right? But some have also W-lan reception and so I could use my normal Wifi I have in my house?

If you have anyother smartphones that you can recomend me please do so

I use a Treo 680 and it doesn't have a problem with dictionaries.

    Over the Internet thing:

The Treo 680 is GSM, and it can get connected to the Internet through GPRS. This is not a matter of getting a SIM card that supports that; GPRS is a complimentary system to GSM exactly focused in that, it doesn't depend on the SIM card. Now, getting Internet access over GSM is, in general terms, expensive. What you shall get is a data plan with any of your local carriers, one that suits your needs and your budget.

The Treo 680 is not G3-enabled. Forget that one.

The Treo 680 is hard to get connected to Wi-Fi. In many other Palm models, some with Palm OS and some others with Windows for Mobile, SD Wi-Fi cards can be used. Not in the 680. There have been several Wi-Fi peripherals that get fixed in the lower terminals (on the lower view of the device, where the sync cable is fixed), but as far as I know, many were not designed for the 680 and all are discontinued.

The Treo 680 can get tethered to a computer. This is, getting connected to the Internet thanks to a computer that is connected to the Internet.

Yes, a keyboard is mostly easier and faster to use than writing on screen with a stylus. Personally, I find the keys on smartphones (such as the 680 you mention below) to be too small for my fingers... so I find writing with a stylus much more comfortable.

Absolutely yes, you can install the dicitonaries I mentioned in my previous post in the 680. The 680 has a lot of internal memory (about 100MB, I think), plus support for SD and SDHC cards, meaning you can install a lot of info, programs, etc.

Yes, you need a SIM with a plan that allows you to browse the web. As for Wi-Fi, the 680 does not have this feature, nor is there a way to add it. No PalmOS smartphone released to date has Wi-Fi. However, some Palm smartphones running Windows Mobile do have Wi-Fi built-in. If this feature is s must, maybe you should take a look at the Windows smartphones. OR, if you want a Wi-Fi-enabled Palm, but do not need the cellphone, then you may find the Palm TX a good choice. Be advised that you're jumping way beyond your original choice (the Z22). The 680 is much more expensive and much more powerful too. Perhaps you could try narrowing down your needs and wants, then looking for a device that best covers them?
