Default :( the infamous screen whine

my screen never had a problem with screen whine. it was perfectly quiet, and looked awesome. unfortunately, after a long day of "wardriving" with it (lol, not really.. i just was looking at all of the ssid's since i knew i would be spending a lot of time on the road today)... and when i got home, i noticed that i got the infamous screen whine :'(

i can only assume that the heat produced by the screen being on for a prolonged amount of time would cause this problem. my only question is, is it common for this sort of thing to happen? i've heard of plenty of people with the screen whine problem, but i don't think i've read one report of a screen developing the whine over time .

i guess to get a one line question from me... i would like to know, do you think this is a sign of to-come problems, or is it just a natural expected thing?

Actually, I think it is much more common experience to have the whine develop gradually and after a period of time.

If it is anything like my TE that I had before, and I think the fundamental problem is the same with TX, the new units are usually very quite, but after a while you will gradually notice increase in the screen whine. My TE, in its last leg, had the whine loud enough to be heard, and to be annoying, at a full arm's length.

I was able to reduce much of the noise by using a program that speeds up the processor. I forget the name of it, since I cannot use it with my TX and so far I do not need to (knock on wood). I am not sure which program would work with TX to reduce the noise but there should be some software solution for it.

The noise seems to be rather "directional." Meaning that if I tilt the screen to a certain angle, I could hear it even though the palm remained the same distance from my ears. So for a while I used to use my TE tilted slightly.

To answer your one line question, I think it is inevitable that most of these screen will develop whining noise over time. It is at certain frequency and the frequency may be different from one palm to the other and it bothers some but not others.... I wouldn't worry too much about it until it becomes bothersome. Then you might want to look for some software solution to it. With the software solution, my TE became usable.

thanks for your input, that makes me feel a lot better.

i am not so much worried about the whine of the screen as i am the life of my tx. i think i can deal with it for now, but if it gets too annoying i may seek a software solution. a lot of people suggested warp speed, but it's not a free program . maybe someone could suggest a free program that will do this as well?

FYI: just keep in mind that any pgm that speeds up the processor will in time decrease the life of your T|X processor. Overclocking even on PC's does tax the processor to extremes in some cases, and will shorten their life considerably.....Rich

My TX developed the dreaded whine after about a month or so of moderate usage. It had been perfectly quiet prior to that. Once the whine started, however, I found that I simply couldn't ignore it. It got to the point where I dreaded using my TX unless there was enough ambient noise to drown out the whine.

Thanks to this forum, I discovered Warpspeed, which killed the whine. It's really a nice little app that allows you to OC your entire system, or simply individual programs. Well worth checking out if the whine gets to be too much.

I'm getting the whine too, after a short period of time. It didn't have it to begin with, just sort of developed one day.

I've run warpspeed, but I think I'm going to do a more permanent solution in the near future.

Seperate digitizer from lcd, and slip some paper around the edges to seperate the digitizer off of the lcd. Shouldn't affect the clarity or the sensitivity/accuracy, but it SHOULD kill the whine (or so I've read)

Is screen whine covered under the warranty? (My TX is fine, I am asking on behalf of my brother and his T5).

Palm's website says the whine is "normal" and that basically they'll do nothing about it, so I don't think it's under warranty.

It bothers people sitting at another table in a not-so-quiet library. Does Palm claim that to be normal?
