Default Internet browsing on the go with T/X

I've been reading up on many post about people using their T/X for browsing the net at home. Now what is the point of that if you got a desktop computer at home?

Why would want to use the T/X rather than your desktop? I think the idea is to be able to surf when you're not at home rather than home. I see many post on how to setup your connection with your home network but nothing on how to do it on the road or at some hotspots.

Tutorials on something like this would be nice. Maybe there is one and I missed it but so far I'm still looking. I would like to use my T/X when I'm on the move or anywhere besides my home for browsing the net.

There are many times when you are in area that requires to to type in a key word or number which you don't have. Obviously that doesn't work. Of course you would need to get some sort of access code or what- not from the admin which is impossible ig you're just freelancing an open server or access.

So I would appreciate some procedure on this issue.

I tried out to see if my T/X would pick up on any open internet connections. I found one but it couldn't be access. I got the could not connect message.

Any further dicussions would be nice. Thanks.

Well, since you ask two questions, I will try to answer them both.

First, why browse on the TX when the desktop is nearby? Well, for a number of reasons, the main one being ease of use. If I am sitting on the couch doing something and want to look up something on the net quickly, the TX is right next to me. If someone else is using the desktop for something more pressing, I can still browse BH or check the weather with my TX. If I am reading a favorite blog, I can take the TX to the, uh, "porcelan reading room" much easier.

Second, connecting "on the go" is a risky proposition. You are at the mercy of someone elses network and in an unsecure state, even if they have given you access to a "secure" network. Just trying to connect to random available connections is the best you can do unless you are someplace that offers service, such as a hotel or coffee shop. There is no "guide" I am afraid in this regard. You just try it and either it works, or it doesn't.

Thank you Dragonhunter. I guess we are all different. I would probably get a laptop as a second computer and not a palm. Much more space

Yup, to each his own. Me, I'm looking at replacing my laptop with a desktop. More power for less money. I've got my Palm I can take on the road.

I meant I would get a laptop, which I have already as a second computer to use around the house then save my T/X for on the road. I already have all the info on my desktop so I can save the batteries on my T/X. Yes, I know it has a A/C adapter but the point again... Any where, just uploaded two films to my SD card and can now play it omt T/X. Now I'm gonna get a 4GB SD to put more films on. So far I'm loving the T/X as it is my first palm ever.

As DH shared, the TX is a secondary portal device.

Me I can read the news, (not allowed to read the paper till wife has ),
check BH USER CP for replies, quickly (do not have to wait of PC or laptop to restore), answer obsure questions with mobile search, with audience thinking all the info is in my Palm

Remote sites as well. Not all Wifi connections you locate will be open. If fact hiJacking a connection that is public is viewed as illegal my many.

Coffee shops, and other public access points advertised with hotspots are best options. They are paying for the service and permitting connection to attract customers with extra service, ever wonder why your latte increased by a quarter

In my house on weekends and some evenings, little fingers are visiting, laptop is like a light bulb to moth, so it is returned to case. TX is often ignored as they prefer the TV remote

I use my TX at home via wifi because as Dragonhunter siad, I can slack off on the sofa and read email and websites (except those few with Flash that don't parse). Since my wife and I sahre the PC, if she's on I am not...which is not a big deal since I have the wifi device! Since I can get my signal all over the house, I can read news and such upstairs drinking coffee, downstairs with everyone hanging out, etc. When I am out I use a combination of cellular BT or wifi (when I can find it) to connect.
