Good News! And Very Bad News...and SUCCESS!
I find myself at a loss about how to proceed, and here is the problem.
Good News! I have a new Palm TX!
BAD NEWS!
I cannot get the TX Desktop to install. I have been working on this for the better part of three days, and there seems to be no way out that I can discover for myself. The CD runs, begins to install and goes thru the uninstall of the previous Desktop (4.1) and then the process just stalls out with a full load bar, but nothing else happens. I've waited, as asked, for as long as 27 minutes and nothing changes.
Must use Ctrl-Alt-Del to get out of the installer and then the Quick Install part of the old Desktop is missing (among other things.) I next have to do a System Restore, restart, repair the old Desktop using the Zire 71 Install CD, and restart again. At Hotsync PC "discovers" the Zire 71 and hotsyncs like normal after telling me that my "new hardware" is ready. Oh, brother! I wish my New Hardware was ready!
I have Admin Privs, AV & FW turned off, SSaver turned off, nothing running that I can isolate. When I run Msconfig, I'm not sure if I can turn off some things which are listed under Startup. (I know Win 98, not Win XP2 Pro.)
I have to still be able to sync the Zire 71 to the same laptop as always, along with the TX, but until I get the TX stuff installed, the New Beauty is an expensive, lovely paperweight. It's been charged & waiting since this past Wednesday.
I thought I'd hit on a solution when I realized that although I'd been running Desktop 4.14 (with unused new PIM conduits) on my old (dead) PC, I'd only installed the original Desktop 4.1 from the Zire 71 CD when I had to set up the replacement laptop. I thought maybe the version I use now was too old for the TX version to overwrite easily. I tried to install 4.14 downloaded from Palm and it stalled out too, just like the TX version. It's worth noting that the Zire 71 CD, while repairing what was wrong, also stalled out and I had to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to end it. What is wrong with this miserable XP2 Pro???
The main point is that ALL installations now stall out after they remove the previous version & then never proceed any further to anything else. ALL installations must be ended manually, and are incomplete. The only step that I haven't taken is to completely uninstall the Desktop thru the Control Panel, only because I don't know what to expect afterward. At least now I can still hotsync my working Zire 71.
I'm sorry for the ramble, but I'm really tired, and this is getting really old (failure) so please give me the benefit of some creative thinking - I'm so depressed.

Re: Good News! And Very Bad News...
Try installing from the hard drive instead of using the CD.

Re: Good News! And Very Bad News...
Try to seperate the procedures.
FIrst copy your user folder out of the c:\Program FIles\Palm (or \Palmone) directory. This probably isnt nescesary but I always do it to have a backup. Put it anywhere you like.
Use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel to remove Palm Desktop.
Restart the computer.
Attempt installation of the new desktop software.
This should do it, but if it doesnt, the next thing I'd check is if there is a new version of Windows Installer by visiting Windows Update.

Re: Good News! And Very Bad News...
Hello lelisa13p:
First, I am not a TX user, I use a T5; however, I went over to palm and researched your problem. I found the following:
How to remove Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager registry entries:
1) Shut down any windows that are open
2) Click on START, then RUN
3) Type in "regedit" and click OK
4) click on the word "Registry" and select EXport Registry File
5) Set the directory where you are saving the registry file to your desktop
6) Type in a name for the file, and make sure ALL is selected -
7) Click on SAVE, and verify that it has created a backup file on your desktop
8) Press the plus sign nex to the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER"
9) Press the plus sign next to the "Software"
10) If you see a folder called "U.S. Robotics" click the pus sign next to it
11) Right click on the "Pilot Desktop" folder and select Delete
12) Close the Registry Editor window
The above instruction should allow you to have a clean installation.
Good Luck

As DJW advices, I also recommend to uninstall incl. removal of registry entries (BTW this same procedure has been added to the FAQ pages in Palm - General recently).

Re: Good News! And Very Bad News...
Thanks for the advice, all.
RootBeer, I copied the CD to the HD, ran the Install and it still stalled out.
(I forgot to list that step in my litany of woe.)
Egad! You've all told me that the next step is the Dreaded Registry Edit?
After I complete that maneuver, and after I use the TX CD to install the Desktop, will the Zire 71 then be recognized later at its first Hotsync? Does the TX Desktop provide for the older PIM conduits that the Z71 needs? I've already copied the Palm folder; I did that before I ever began this Adventure. I am a Look-Before-You-Leaper, and I get very anxious if I don't know what to expect.
My whole problem lies with Win XP2, I think, considering I never got any grief with 2 other PCs & Win 98 & XP1, but I also never had this particular set of circumstances, either.
Thanks for posting the steps, DJW and thanks for your suggestions, Shur.
I'd actually already looked that stuff up at Palm, but I was hoping really hard that I wouldn't have to go that far (Edit Registry <shudder>
).
Huge thanks to my off-stage helpers.
As for you, Holvy, cross your fingers & toes, and don't look for an amended sig yet; success will determine when that happens.
BTW, you can return that shoe at your leisure; I found it on the Breakroom floor. I think it belongs to Nine, anyway.

Re: Good News! And Very Bad News...
Might I inquire as to the brand of this uncooperative computer? I have seen some postings around regarding Toshiba Satellites that have not been positive.

You may, and it is a Dell Inspiron B130, the bad boy.
(Why does this Registry stuff scare me so much?
)

Re: Good News! And Very Bad News...
That's how I installed the Zire 71 Desktop onto this laptop when it was new in December. It was deceptively smooooth.
Now I find that the trouble comes when I have to upgrade the Desktop.
