Default Is a backup solution really necessary with the T|X?

I own Backupman 1.55 and it is set to backup my T|X every night at 2:00 a.m. Because of the T|X's NVFS, is this really necessary? The reason I ask is because it usually takes about 5 minutes of intensive CPU time to do this and it runs down the battery. The less I have the charge, the better it is for me.

Is Backupman really necessary on a NVFS Palm? Has anyone EVER lost their data because of a crash or involuntary hard reset on a T|X?

    What took so long?

I'm always testing apps, thus hard resetting from time to time. For me the answer is absolutely yes.

Unfortunately hard re-sets on the Palm T/X seem to be all too common - I've had mine now for about 4 weeks and I've lost count of the hard re-sets and restores I have done from Back Up Buddy. At home of course I have my PC and hot synch, but it happens when I'm using the Palm out and about so yes, some form of back up program on the Palm itself is essential.

Not having a TX myself ...
As DAwoodcock4 says, it is not because the data is preserved when you run down the battery because it has NVFS, it is completely safe.
Any condition causing you the hard reset will wipe out your data.
Any new program you install that due to a bug corrupts your data makes you want to be able to restore as well.

I hook my T3 on the USB cable every night so it can trickle charge. This way the backup at 04h00 AM will not have any negative impact on the charge when I pick up my device in the morning.

Look at it from another angle:
Most new cars have ABS (at least, in Europe that is the case, I can not tell for sure in US). You never WANT to use that, but you surely will be VERY glad you have it once you need it. With THAT part I have quite a bit of positive experience as well

Hard resets? They are a fact of life on my TX.

I use Resco Backup for nightly incremental backups. They only take a few seconds. I use Backupman for weekly full backups (separate) but haven't had to restore from a Backupman set since I got Resco. I just like the redundancy. Yesterday, I downloaded sharkclear and installed it via wifile pro. I launched it, picked "clear cache on power off" then picked "enable". Wham. my TX was frozen when I hit power off. I waited a few seconds and decided to poke the reset hole. What I was hoping would be a soft reset continued right through hard reset, with no offer to push "up" and the next screen I saw was digitizer calibration. I guess I will have to post this to the sharkclear thread, but I suspect there is something amiss with my TX. Anyway, to the point. Resco backup restored my device to where it was at 5 am yesterday morning and the uninvited hard reset was a non event.

Would you really want to take the chance in losing everything? With your data, it's much better to be safe than sorry. I should practice what I preach though, I don't want to spend $15 on RescoBackUp.

Why not leave the T|X charging overnight during the time period for which the backup is scheduled?

Backup necessary? <DH grabs a paper bag and breathes in and out repeatedly for a few minutes while looking for som valium>

    Yes. What happens if....

TX spontaneously hard resests? I've heard it happens. <MP, can I get an amen?>
Drop it and break the screen?
    Loose it?
    Have it stolen?
If your data isn't worth more than your device, is the device worth having?

Yes, multiple, redendant, physically seperate backups! (That means just backing up to your card isn't good enough. If you loose your TX...your card is probably going to be in it....Copy those backups to your PC...and you are backing up your PC, right? And encrypting sensitive data? And....

Huh? <DH goes back to the paper bag....>

I do two card back-ups, one to the card I keep in the T/X (which also has MP3s and videos on it) and one to a card I keep elsewhere - just in case the T/X is lost or stolen. Mind you in either case I'd still have the last synch on my PC.
