Default Wish list for future Treo's

The Treo 650 is my first smartphone but my 4rth Palm device (after a Apple Newton). I am very satisfied with it. Its form factor is very good - and is copied by other companies.

The new Treo 700p is not an option for my. I wish more variability for the future models:

    Treo Evolution
Keep the same area of the 650/700 but make it (much) thinner and lighter – and, of course, with an internal antenna!

    Treo Mini
A Treo more like an ordinary cellphone: smaller, thinner and lighter. I would accept a smaller screen (240x320) if a landscape mode is possible. I can also forgo for a QWERY keyboard for a small form factor. The keyboard of the new Sony Ericsson M600i is an interesting option.
A Treo Mini would be very certainly my next Treo!

    Treo Maxi
This should be a PDA with big screen (640x320) like the LifeDrive but with phone capabilities.

After a few weeks in on the Q, I definitely think Palm has to do something to get the size and weight down a little.

As a Treo 650 owner for some time now, I have some definite concerns I would like to see addressed in my next smartphone.

1 - smaller and lighter - thinner with no external antenna but still big enough for a qwerty keyboard - I don't mind the size after a TX, but the Treo is bigger than any phone I have previously carried. I'm NOT willing to deal with entering pda data with a numeric keypad so it has to be big enough for a full qwerty keyboard.

2 - more internal memory - this has already been addressed in the 700p

3 - dedicated numeric keys portion of the qwerty keyboard or an easier way of shifting - how about retroactive shifting - paint and highlight and convert to numeric? - this affects my usage of the Treo as a pda. having to shift all the time is a pain.

4 - support for evdo data - this has already been addressed in the 700p

5 - more robust hardware headphone jack. - i came close to purchasing the shure i2c headphone/phone headset only to find out that headphone jack failure is statistically significant on Treos. I would have felt like an idiot to shell out over a hundred bucks on a fancy headset only to have the jack break a few months later. I evaluated one at Ohare airport (skytunes or something like that) and found that the connection was intermittent and I had to "jiggle" the connector to get the thing to work right. Later when I read the jacks fail a lot I threw the idea out of my mind. An alternative would be the availability of a bluetooth combo headset/headphones and the appropriate profile in the Treo.

6 - voice recorder - i hear they've taken care of this on the 700p

7 - firefox on palmos - palm should put some programmers on this right now unless they intend to use ALP(access linux platform) and netfront. But blazer doesn't quite cut it (though i hear blazer is somewhat improved on the 700p)

8 - paused apps remember their state (poor man's multitasking). i think this would actually be better than true multitasking. if i've looked up a phone number then switch to calendar to set a meeting, when i come back to contacts, i want to be where i left off, not staring at "a" again. i wouldn't mind if i had to hit a menu option to "remember when i am right now" before leaving an app.

9 - better ergonomics. The Treo line of smartphones has been out long enough that some minor ergonomic snafu's can now be addressed... having vibrating alerts on by default WHILE I'M ON A CALL? i don't think so. Having touchscreen on by default during a call? i don't think so. Why isn't there an option for the rocker to look up names like on the TX rather than typing them in? This should have made it onto the 700p at least.

10 - Where the heck is the wifi already? Why should I pay for 'net access at a free hotspot? There are plenty of places where cell signals are weak but somebody has made a hotspot. It's about my convenience, not forcing me to use a technology which doesn't work in every situation. If Verizon won't let you sell it that way, then sell me an unlocked CDMA Treo with wifi. Verizon or Sprint will still activate it because they want my money even if they are unwilling to subsidize development of such a device or sell it in their stores.

11 - cameraless option available from day 1 or even as a user configurable option, possibly by unplugging and removing the camera module and swapping to a case with no camera hole.

All this being said, the Treo 650 is still the best phone I have ever had and an adequate pda. While I'm sure the 700p is even better, I wish Palm would take a look at this list while they consider what to do on the 750p...

I'd love to be able to go into wireless sync email and delete all instead of each individual email. ....er, that is assuming there is not some sort of shortcut that I have overlooked....

Great ideas. I'd also like to add voice recognition (in other words voice to text). That would be VERY handy!
