    Default Slow Centro?

For a long time I have relied on the Thread: "Default Compatible Centro Apps- Let’s Keep Track!" I have read and reread Ward.Smith & Headcronie's writings about the speed of their Centros. I finally got brave enough and installed PalmInternals onto my Centro. I put it on my card. Anyway, I ran it - and it did indeed crash the Centro. After it reset, I went back into PalmInternals, skipping the initial "Database scan" and ran the speed test. Here are my results: Time in tics 19570, time in secs 195.

Following the conversation of Ward.Smith & Headcronie in the above mentioned thread - I think I got a problem. I haven't noticed the Centro being slow running apps. I've been using Palms for 12-13 years and it seems to run the apps fine - but I do think the Blazer is slow. I ran a test to check my internet speed - but the only way I know of being able to do that is connecting my Palm to my laptop through PDAnet and on laptop going to Broadband Speed Test v10.8 by testmy.net and running a test from Explorer or Firefox. Doing that, here are my download results: 270 Kbps or 0.3 Mbps (33 kB/s) & my upload results: 114 Kbps or 0.1 Mbps (14 kB/s).

Using Palminternals I can't seem to find how to get the "hede" results - maybe that info comes up when my Palm crashes when I first open up the program and click yes to the opening screen that says: "Database scan is required. This operation can crash your NVFS device (TT5, TE2, Treo650). Do you want to continue?"

So, any suggestions, thoughts or advice? Thanks is advance as always for any assistance and help that you offer!

you can say No, i.e., skip the scan, and in the window that opens click on the Notif. button. that'll give you a list of apps and their associated notifications. fwiw, my speed test (within PI) is 1377 tics, 14 seconds, with the phone function turned on (but the phone is not activated). Sprint branded, btw.

Speedtest.net works on my TX (wifi); have you tried it while having the phone connect to the net?

EDIT: forget that bit about speedtest.net; site requires Flash version 8 or higher

RickAgresta, I sent you my results - I didn't know if it was appropriate to post all of them here. I have no idea what to make of them - it seems different than what Ward.Smith & Headcronie were talking about when writing about the "hede" apps.

As far as internet sites that test speed I get the following note: "Speedtest.net requires at least version 8 of Flash. Please update your client." I don't think that this is possible is it with the Centro?

Wow, I looked back and just read that whole thread. I do not even remember doing all of that. Palminternals was buggy but it did work and the website that worked for Blazer back then was http://testmy.net/. I guess that it will no longer work with Blazer. That's progress for you. I think the key is finding a website that will work on the Centro with Blazer. Once you have that you can delete and add until you have the fastest combination. Of course if you have all apps that you can't live without, there is no point in doing the tests at all.

My Centro seems to be just as fast or slow as it always was. It is be far the most stable pda that I have ever used; but I know so much more than I did 10 years ago and that probably really helps.

On a sad note I have started using an iPod Touch; and I find that as a pda it is amazing so in the last 2 months I have only used my centro for phone calls, occasional email and webrowsing to check scores and the surf. The only apps that I still use regularly on my Centro are tide table, shopper, total car, and profileMD. As soon as Verizon gets the iPhone, I am done with my 13 year relationship with Palm. Until then my Centro works great for the few things that I use it for.
I would rather surf the ocean than the net. Cowabunga!

OldSurfDog, thanks again for your input. Our 14 year old son worked this past summer for us and we bought him a 32g iTouch. I have been avoiding the hype of Apple, but I do have to say, I am amazed at how well it works. The iTouch is what the TX should have been and more - but thanks to Palm...

I have about 9 more months with my Verizon contract. I'm really considering going to Sprint - due to their prices, especially on data. I live in the Phoenix area - so connection is not a problem for me - and usually only travel in areas that all the plans work. I have a feeling that when the time comes I'll be following Hook's lead and going with an Android phone. I'm still holding my breath, though, for Palm. We'll see what happens with them & HP in the upcoming months. As for my son, he says he wants a Pre as a phone (go figure). If that's the case, I sure hope Sprint and Palm team up and at least upgrade Sprint's Pre to a PrePlus.

We use to live in the Bay area for 10 years (Sunnyvale - maybe that's why I like Palm, although I worked 2 miles from Apple) and would get up to Mount Hermon usually once a year in "your neck of the woods". Take care and enjoy your summer and watch out for sharks!
