    Default BIS Guide?

Is there a guide that explains what can be moved to BIS and the most expedient method(s) to get it there?

There's no guide really, but most programs (a few exceptions, notably system apps) can be stored there. As far as the best way to get them there, I just use ActiveSync to install programs, and *not* select the default installation location. ActiveSync then gives you the option to install to BIS, memory card, or main memory.

One thing to remember is that alternate memory locations (BIS and memory cards) initialize late in the reset cycle, so Today screen plug-ins and apps that run during startup are best installed to the default location (main memory). Installing these to a memory location not available when they are supposed to run/load will cause them to fail. For most others, installation to an alternate location is fine. There are exceptions (such as MS Money for PPC) that must be in main memory in order to properly sync.

As pointed out above, when installing through AS, respond No when asked about installing to the default location and a box will open listing the alternate locations. If installing directly on your device through a CAB file, Cabinstl is a free app that lets you redirect to an alternate location. Under either procedure, a folder is created on the location's root directory for the installing app.

Just an FYI - I have not had any issues with installing Spb's Pocket Plus 3.0 and Spb's Today Weather applet (both Today plug-ins) in BIS.

Cabinstl? Why not using Gerard's cab Tweak

Because I happen to prefer Cabinstl. It's so nice to have a choice.

Sure. But why doing it difficult if it can be done easy?

The tweak doesn't work with all apps. I haven't encountered any that don't work with Cabinstl. Since when has Cabinstl been hard? Especially since I don't need to guess which installs may not like the tweak.

Curious. Can you provide an example of a CAB that didn't like the tweak?

All the tweak really does is changes the save as dialog box to a more flexible one with more options and has a few registry settings to prevent the default ce installer from deleting the CAB.

The install is handled much the same as if you had never heard of CabInstl but Microsoft had created a better "save as" or "install to" dialog and the CAB was marked read only.
