Help those who help themselves.... Click on the seach button and search the Dell Axim forum for SDIO. You'll get your answer There is a lot of decent information here already, you just need to know where to find it.

    Cool

SD I/O is esentially Secure Digital devices, such as modems, ethernet cards, GPS units, cameras, etc. Regular SD is memory only. The Axim can only use regular SD cards.

I was talking to a guy about SDIO and he was saying that if a manufacturer designed the SD port correctly, a driver or flash upgrade might be able to enable SDIO.

Because you've posted in the Axim forum, I'll assume that you're talking about why would you want it in an Axim... If you have a need for one I/O device (modem, ethernet, whatever) in your CF slot while simultaneously using an I/O device in he SD slot, then you would want SDIO. An example might be using a Bluetooth SDIO card to connect to Bluetooth mobile phone to allow you to use your contacts directory in your PPC as your phonebook for the mobile phone, while at the same time using a wifi card in the CF slot to allow you to download mp3's from your pc. Secondly, you might have some device that only comes in CF format like a 3Gig memory card or microdrive and want to use a sd wifi card to load info onto it.

I specifically scratched looking at Axim, because I want my MP3's in my CF slot on a microdrive or (at minimum) a 1GB CF card. I would like to add an SD Bluetooth card when I get a Bluetooth cell phone, but w/o SDIO that would not be possible.

As for the idea about the software activation of the SDIO features, I believe that if you do some more searching on that you will find that the bandwidth available in most non-sdio pda's will be physically limited in such a way as to make it impractical to really use that approach.

Out of cost effectiveness they choose to go for SD instead of SDIO. it is 1 bit instead of 4 bit data transmission speed (don't ask me the specs, just parroting here ), and there is probably some hard wiring to be done as well.

As for memory/peripherals, the SD or MMC cards are gaining size fast, so this choice is hardly an issue IMO. Although the prices of SD are still higer than CF. Then again, SDIO cards are extremely more expensive than CF peripherals. So that's a 1 on 1 there. Bottom line for me, I think, is two slots of which one xxIO is good enough for me! I mean, a Ipaq 3970 with bluetooth, SDIO and a double CF II sleeve would be your thing then? Might want to try a corset to support your back with that

(Couldn't resist, I'm a brick owner who can finally reverse the comment )
