copying large files
I am having a problem copying large files to my axim. I have been doing a lot of research into this issue and have found many threads about this, both here and in dells fourm. However I still have not recieved a good response. The problems is everytime I start to copy a file it goes for about 1 min and then loses connection. It only happens when I copy a file. Syncing works perfectly.
I am running a Dell Inspiron 8000 notebook in a docking station. I have tried to copy files both in the docking station and out, I have the most recent BIOS version. I am running Win 2000 and have every Microsoft update available. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling activesync several times. I have even tried using a guest connection and that didn't work. The only way I can copy files to the axim is to use the IR connection. I can, however, copy files from the Axim to the notebook. I am really at a loss here. I really want to know if Dell or someone else is working on a fix for this problem. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. thanks

I thought that might be a problem as well, however I have the same problem when I copy to the main memory.

Copying large files
I am also having the same problem. If I drop say, a large (2MB) file into 'my documents' using either the active sync or windows explorer or the Axim 'my documents' folder shortcut on the desktop, it may load anywhere from 25% to 75% before it hangs and disconnects.
Other issues I have...
>Random disconnects during activesync
>Occasionally calendar, contacts and notes grays out during sync (other options ok) with message to disconnect and retry.
>Avantgo hit or miss
>Loading McAffe's virusScan 7.0 hosed my sync process, I have to disable it before syncing (admittedly McAfee's problem).
I've never had these problems with my Ipaq, but still I'm satisfied with the Axim overall. I'm confident these issues will be resolved.

I had this problem as well when I first got the unit. I was able to fix it. I am not sure how but this is what I did. I upgraded to activesync 3.6 and downloaded all of the microsoft updates. I no longer lose sync unless I try to copy a large file. This is a problem I can cope with but I am disappointed with Dell's response, or lack of response. I have a friend who had a Toshiba with the same problem and Toshiba never even tried to correct the problem. I hope Dell does not make the same mistake.Random disconnects during activesync

If you copy a lot of large files to storage cards you might want to get yourself a flash reader instead of using activesync. That way you can copy files MUCH faster and you won't have to worry if the files will copy completely or not.

This thread at the dell site forum seems to address this issue (so far 8 pages). Basically, seems to be a usb issue. An early indicator seems to be that a USB 2.0 card fixes the issue, though that's not an acceptable solution to many, as it shouldn't be. Still, I think I'll go pick one up. Never know how long Dell will take to resolve this with an update. I'll post whether or not this is a fix for me.

Large Files
I realize that this might not help the dicussion much but I just copied a 8mb file to my son's Axim without problems. He had approximately 1/2 of his 128MB SD card full before I copied the 8mb file to his card.
I am running a Dell Inspiron 8100 Windows XP with Active Sync 3.6 Build 2148. I have him set up as a guest.
I guess I could have gotten lucky but an 8mb file is fairly large for a ppc and if the problem was univeral to all Axim's you would think I would have certainly had problems with a file that size.
Oh well like I said this may not be helping the issue but I thought it was worth mentioning that so far I have had success with this.

USB 2.0 card worked for me
Per my previous posts, I was having many of the same problems as everyone else... disconnects, hanging while syncing (especially Avantgo), couldn't transfer large files.
Adding a USB 2.0 pci card solved all my problems. Luckily Circuit City had a SIIG 5 port for $19.99 (mismarked, should have been $39.99). I've seen this work for others and have posted this at the Dell site, though it may not be a resolution for everyone. It's still the responsibility of Dell to correct this issue, but I don't have the patience to wait (I might send them the receipt along with a flame letter to recoup my out of pocket expense, but I won't hold my breath).
Good Luck...
FYI...Dell Dimension 8100 w/ XP Pro, updated drivers and chipsets. Also, I've never had any problems with my Ipaq using the same pc system and activesync version. I'm fairly convinced it has to do with the Axim usb driver.Sgt. Rotton

Well there must be something unreliable specifically about Activesync and the Dell units.
I'm using my Compaq TabletPC w/ WinXP (USB2.0) and when I tried Activesync'ing (as Guest or w/ Partnership) with 2 different Dell systems I would still get occasional disconnects. However, same config on my Audiovox Maestro (w/ USB cradle) works perfectly.
In the end I had to use my WIFI card on my Dell to install large files reliably.
I installed Activesync on some Win98 & Win2K systems and sync'ing with the Dells is no problem w/ partnership.
I'm using a USB cable for the Dells and it's pretty clear that the cable's inserted correctly since it's such a tight fit.
