802.11b speeds with Axim
What type of speed do you all get with 802.11b on your PPC's??
I have a Dell Axim Advanced and a Netgear MA701 CF card. I have a 1.5 Mbps cable modem but I can't seem to get any faster than about 33 - 35 KBps (264 to 280 kbps) even though I get an 11 Mbps link to my wireless access point. Any thoughts?? For now, I do not have WEP enabled and there seems to be little to no difference in speed between short and long preamble mode. Any tweaks?? BTW, is it just me or is PIE really slow???
Thanks!

Yeah PIE is a pig.
Running in adhoc and copying files between my Axim and my PC I can get up to maybe 250KB/s or 280KB/s.
There are many things that affect throughput though. One of the major ones on the Internet is the relationship between latency and TCP Window sizing.
One factor that is an issue is the actual speed of the reads and writes to the internal memory on the Axim. I don't think you'll EVER see close to 11Mb/s speeds.. (Or 6Mb/s which is typically the peak throughput on an 11Mb/s WLAN).

Good points! I have copied an MP3 over to my Axim via wireless and I got similar performance to your experience (via infrastructure mode). Oh well, hopefully MS comes out with an optimized PIE or maybe Netfront will be pretty good. Personally, I wish someone would start working on a PPC version of Mozilla!Yeah PIE is a pig.

I think there are some 3rd party browers around... It would be interesting to see some speed comparisons..

I tried the Netfront browser trial version and I thought it loaded up pages a lot faster than PIE. The only downfall is everytime you loaded the browser it would take a long time. Once the browser was loaded into memory it cruised along fine. I just couldnt put up with loading it everytime i wanted to browse so i tossed it. If they improved the load time of the application, it would defintley top PIE - IMHO

it was about 20 seconds, about the same time it took to load pocketartist.
