Many netbooks come with a recovery partition on the hard drive...by hitting a certain F-key during startup you can restore to factory conditions.

Alternately, buy an external CD-ROM or hard drive for $50 and use those.

Or if you're the sort who plans ahead, you can write a full OS install package to a bootable USB stick (or bootable SD card in a USB SD reader). That's how I installed a modified (scaled down for the roughly 3.8GB space on the initial SSD) version of Windows 7 onto my Asus 901. Many users report details of various methods of doing this sort of install, or restore from a USB stick-mounted OS image, in the forums at forum.eeeuser.com

Or of course you may install from a DVD using an external DVD drive, provided that the drive is compatible for such use, and that booting from USB devices is enabled in the BIOS. Using an external DVD drive is great if you already have one, but an unnecessary expense if you don't, as a USB drive/reader is far less expensive. An 8GB SD card or USB stick is pretty cheap by comparison. Of course you need a PC with a DVD drive to do the initial card formatting and writing the OS image to it...

I "fixed" my Acer Aspire One by using a usb cdrom drive. I ordered a Ubuntu 8.10 Live DVD from Canonical (so it came with more stuff and required less download time) and used it to install on my AAO.

I never bothered to order a windows install cd while it would have been free so when I sell my AAO, there won't be a cd to go with it.

I'm actually on my second AAO. I created a bootable usb stick the first time I installed Ubuntu and it was such an awkward process I decided I wanted a real hard disk and not the 4 Gig SSD so I returned my first one and got the 160 gig model I have now.

The Times also had a step-by-step guide to making a 'repair disk.' Check out the 'Bits Blog' section a couple of days back.

I'm not finding that, Varjak. Can you provide a link? The closest thing I could find was some reference to a Windows 7 repair disk: Tech Talk Podcast: Distracted Driving and Green Gadgets - Bits Blog - NYTimes.com and that wasn't very helpful.

Isn't a repair disc what the OP wanted? He didn't specify Windows 7 or XP (or Linux for that matter).

Um... he mentioned 'windows' (his lowercase W) twice in the original question. So yeah, I think he's not talking Linux.
