Windows XP Compatibility
I just purchased a new desktop with Windows XP. I installed Palm Desktop with and without Outlook and in both cases the computer freezes during a sync. Not every time but frequently.
The screen turns blue and I'm directed to turn off the computer and, if the problem persists, to call the software company for possible updates. There is also an error message with a palm file listed.
I could find nothing like an update on the Palm website.
Can you help? Thanks.

Hello, aschiffr.
Can you provide more info, please?
What version of XP are you using? Pro, Home, Media?
What version of PalmDesktop are you installing?
Can you post the exact, entire error message you are getting, especially the palm file mentioned?
Did your XP user account have administrative rights when you installed PalmDesktop?raspabalsa

Hi -
Thanks for your help. I haven't had the problem since writing my message and didn't copy down the exact error message before. If it happens again, I will do so.
I have Windows XP Home Edition. I think the Palm version is 4.1 and I do have administrative rights, since it is a home computer and there is only one user identified.
Thanks again.

hi aschiffr, Welcome to BrightHand should nobody have told you before

Which Service Pack are you running ?
Did you run Windows Update after applying PalmDesktop.
Are you CERTAIN you have admin rights ? Check Control Panel - User Accounts.
When you get the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) which file is listed as the problem maker ? USB most likely ...Digital since 1980, handheld since 2001

On XP, the BSOD will present itself with Palm desktop, if the user attempting to implement Palm software logged in via USER SWITCHING, a feature of the XP OS.When you get the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) which file is listed as the problem maker ? USB most likely ...
Previous user must be logged of, and new current user must log in. Palm desktop and Windows security conflicts when User switching is utilized causing crash.Welcome to Brighthand

Hi -
Thank you for your suggestions and help.
I'm running Service Pack 2 and I have run Windows Update since applying PalmDesktop (with Microsoft Outlook). However, I don't remember whether I ran Windows Update before or after the last BSOD. It hasn't occurred recently so maybe the problem is solved.
I don't remember the file listed on the BSOD but I'm pretty sure it included USB in it as well as Palm.
I assume I have administrative rights because I am the only user but will check on my home computer this evening.
Since I'm the only user, user switching shouldn't be a problem, should it?
Thanks again.

Even as the only user, Fast user switching is generally not well digested by PalmDesktop.
Anyhow, should it occur again, make sure to take notes and let us know.
Personally I am very suspicious about 'events' disappearing by themselves ... usually they come back one day or the other ...

Hi -
You got that right. BSOD happened this afternoon while I was syncing. It seemed to occur either when Pocket Quicken was being transferred or when it was transferring from the Internet.
Here's what it said:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Technical Info:
STOP:0x000000D1 (OXOOOOOOO4,OXOOOOOOO2, 0X00000000, OXAA1ABDAE)
***Palmusbd.sys - Address AA1ABDAE base at AA1AA000
Datestamp: 3b950379
Before this happened, I received an error report from Microsoft that talked about a problem with Palm Desktop and recommending I contact them although the message said they had contacted Palm without effect.
Do you think I should reinstall? What do you think about all this?

Hello, aschiffr.
That error message is telling you that something is wrong with the palm USB drivers (file Palmusbd.sys). Are you sure you had administrative rights before installing PalmDesktop? I've read several threads about problems with USB connectivity when the installation was done without adminsitrative rights. Are you sure you are not using fast user switching? As said above, that may be the cause.
However, to me the error seems to point to a failed installation. You should uninstall and reinstall PalmDesktop. Before proceeding, be sure to copy your hotsync backup folder elsewhere on your hard disk to avoid loss of information.raspabalsa

Apart from de-installing the USB drivers, you might also consider to clean up the registry entries referring to PalmDesktop and alikes ...
Have a look at this thread and the one it refers to as well.Digital since 1980, handheld since 2001
