Default This Device Cannot Start (Code 10)

I have an M505 - a few years old obviously. Have had trouble since day 1 but decided to live with it...and now might need to replace this unit, unless somone can help.

I have a brand spanking new Win XP Pro box, the new usb cradle and desktop 4.0, 4.1, every download I could find, drivers, patches, etc.

I loaded the desktop software rebooted, plugged in the usb cradle rebooted, sync button gives nothing but a timeout on the palm. I have tried 4 different USB cradles, the 2 old ones and 2 new ones (wife has same model) USB into a hub and directly into the pc. Have installed and uninstalled numerous times, each time cleaning out the registry and c:\palm directory

I have HARD RESET my palm and completely erased everything in it (OUCH!) restoring it to factory spec's. Lost EVERYTHING since I have never had a sync complete on this box (last one was on a work laptop and no longer have access to it).

Under Hardware mngr I had to install the palm manually and it still has the error code 10, "This Device Cannot Start" no matter what I try.

any ideas? I know the usb ports work both in the hubs and off the mainboard.

for what it is worth, I have not had a sync in a long long time- gave up for a while and now have the need to dust off the PDA and try to revive it from its suspected ESD disaster with the original cradle. thanks Palm.

Mmm, it's a long shot, but did you check to be sure USB HotSync'ing was activated in HotSync Manager? Right-click on the HotSync icon on the toolbar and make sure "Local USB" is checked. If not, check it.

ESD (electrostatic discharge) can effect teh USB circuits on the m505.
To clear and reset the USB comm circuits you must complete the battery drain fix or open the back of the unit and disconnect the battery. Battery drain will take about 10 hours if fully charged, but allow for 4 hours when the screen shuts down.
To learn more about SUDS and the battery drain review this FAQ thread.

Does the wife's unit sync with the XP instalation?

The hub you have connected, is it self powered? If not, for the first hotsync it is recommended to connect directly to a main USB port. Non powered USB hubs may not share adequate current for the Palm's USB data transfer.

    When preparing the XP PC and loading the Palm software some suggestions include;
    1. User must be signed in with full admin rights to load the software.
    2. All software applications on the PC must be closed.
    3. Virus protection software must be disabled for the install.
    4. Try installing from the Palm installation CD. If not and installing from the download, reloate the install app to the C: loaction. Its performance is unpredictable from deeper in the directory tree.

    Hope this is of help!

i think completely erasing everything off the palm makes it feel a bit more snappy, too! less clutter.
