You can try changing it to

    Connect to: PC

(No, that doesn't make sense, but sometimes it works.)

You can also try decreasing the speed. If you're dialing in to an ISP over GSM, the correct speed is 9600.

    Let me know...

    Interesting
    Reset to 9600
result was a text message from my mobile provider six seconds later, full of garbage, and prefixed "please delete"
    HA

Reset to IR to PC - pressed connect, it dialled, connected for 7 seconds, dropped, message "no carrier"

I read the manual again last night - I can't see anything in there that I have done wrong, but then it isn't very precise in places, is it?

    Hurumph!

    Thanks for your consideration!

This is your problem! You're attempting to use your BT 'AnyTime' access number (the one that gives you free connection for 15 quid a month).

This 0808 number can *only* be used from the wired phone line to which you registered the Anytime service, and it has to be a BT phone line -- mobiles don't work.

The BT Openworld standard Dial Up number is

    0845 756000 (alternatively, +44 845 756000)

You will be charged for the call -- there aren't any unmetered services available via mobile.

    Cheers
    Steve T

I tried this number Steve; it still hangs up after about six seconds, with "Error: no carrier (Ox 1102)

Ok, I haven't used my BT for a while, as I moved over to Vodafone GPRS for data. I tried connecting my BT account, and I discovered it doesn't work for me, either!

My configuration is similar to yours, although I have 'Disable Call Waiting' unchecked. I went through the BT FAQ on their website, and they insist you must use a CLI - enabled phone line (i.e., the recipient can see your phone number when you call them) for the purposes of their audit trails.

But my mobile does send CLI, so that's not the problem for me (although it may be a reason why you're not connecting?)

I then tried my LineOne account, which has identical settings except Query DNS is automatic (and, of course, the user id and password are different, and the phone number is +44 845 6614681.)

    That worked perfectly.

So I'm tempted to suggest, go to www.lineone.co.uk and set up a free pay as you go account there.

If you have a BT email account and a wireless client, you can still receive your BT email, but just change the outgoing server to smtp.lineone.net.

Because the phone number is still a national rate call, this won't cost you anything over what you'd have paid to connect to BT.

I'll continue to research the BT situation, but it may take a while and I may have no success, so I wouldn't wait for a BT solution unless you have a compelling reason.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers

Whoah, hold the phone! I gave you the wrong number...

    +44 845 756 0000

    (four zeros, not three)

    Most interesting!
With a Tiscali - seems to be the line 1 new name - account, and using the number you gave, I twice got as far as "signing on"
Then both times the line dropped at 37 seconds....
