Unhappy win xp + m515 -> no IR sync?

    Hello.

I cannot IR sync my new m515 with my laptop. The wireless link tray icon pops up with "IrCOMM is in range" but nothing more.

    * ir port enabled in bios

    * hotsync running. no other programs using ir port running.

    * hotsync manager 4.0.1

    * tried checking "infrared" and/or "serial" in hotsync tray popup menu

    * tried lowering speed in device manager, on palm, in hotsync (when using serial connection mapper)

    * hotsync on palm set to "ir to pc/handheld"

    * i have tried this tip

    Any suggestions?

    /p.

    Default IR Synch

I'm on Windows ME but your setup & IR problem sounds very similar. Here's how I circumvented the problem:

    1. First you need to find out which is your SIMULATED IR COM port or "Virtual Infrared COM port".
    2. Right Click MY COMPUTER and select "Properties"
    3. Select the "Device Manager" tab and check "View Devices by Connection" button.
    4. You need to know first which Ports belong to the "other" devices, such as modem and mouse. Try selecting the odd one out, possibly "Serial Cable on COM4". Click on Modem tab
    5. If this is the right simulated port, the box that follows ought to display "Virtual Infrared COM port" and the port number.
    6. Now you need to make sure your dekstop Hotsynch app is using the same port number and you only need to check the "Local Serial" connection and NOT "Infrared"

I know the implementation on WinXP is somewhat different, but the idea is to "fool" HotSynch into thinking that Virtual Infrared COM Port is a Serial port.

    Hope this helps.

    Talking

    yay!

i had to download IrCOMM driver from this site ..

    and now it works!

brodyer, thanks for your advice. but in windows 2000/xp there is no "virtual ir com port". but the idea of "fooling" hotsync to use ir port as serial got me searching the net for virtual com-drivers for win xp and i found the above page!

    and now it works!!

(still, it would be great to use the "real" infrared sync, because i have a feeling that it is faster)

    /p.

    Default IR vs USB

Glad you found the solution! But honestly, the absolute fastest way to synch with your desktop is to use a USB cradle. Moving up from Vx to 515, I have to say that one of the smartest things Palm did was to switch from serial to USB.. way way faster.. try synching Avantgo, Dataviz Docs & PhotoSuite files and you'll know what I mean

Thanks piotr, was able to get the infrared hotsynch working after getting the driver from the website that you listed. The driver was under the folder labeled "Windows 2000/XP IRComm" then under that, select the folder labeled "FREE IRComm", downloading it was easy, extracted the zip file I downloaded to a folder on the C drive, then ran setup.exe ...

    Other details;
selected "infrared" in Hot Synch managerin "setup" I clicked Com4..

I have an IBM Thinkpad running Win2000/NT , went into thinkpad software and selected com 4 as the port for infrared

went into "control panel">"wireless link" as the driver website mentioned, on the "file transfer" tab I only clicked "Display an Icon.." leave all others unchecked. On the "Image Transfer" tab uncheck it all..

On the desktop, right click "My Computer", click "hardware" tab, click "device manager".. click the "view" tab at the top to select "devices by type" a list will appear, look for "Infrared Devices" if it has a "+" click that and select the device under that, (mine was labeled "IBM Thinkpad Fast Infrared Port".. right click that , select "advanced" tab and 3 options appear, "infrared Transceiver A" Infrared Transceiver B" and "Maximum Connect Rate". For Infrared Transceiver A and B, select "IBM SC-20H2987" in the drop down box for both and for maximum connect rate I selected 115200 but you may have to back that down to 38400 for a more stable connection.

It's always details and time. Took some fiddling to finally get this to work so maybe this will help someone else as well!

    Thumbs up

    Just to let you know.

This link worked for me. Here

I know the original poster said it did not for them. But I had something else opening the port. Once this was dissabled it worked great for me, w/o the virtual serial port driver etc!

Pretty quick too.. Hope you get it working! This thread finally got mine running! thx lads.
