    What I usually do is apply the protector little by little. Using the card thingy to push out air bubbles and if it doesn't move it's probably debris. For debris, I use some kind of adhesive tape like masking tape to remove the debris from either the handheld or the protector itself. I do this little by little till I've covered the whole screen.

    I'm using palm's protector and I've used a similar one from another maker (forgot which). It's kind of thicker so it's a lot easier to apply. It's not clear like glass but it protects well enough.

    I recommend CoverTec, as I changed mine last night... after two years of extremely heavy use (with hardly a scratch to show for it). They are also fantastically easy to apply and are not over-sticky.

    Used my Zire (the original) for three years and never once used a screen protector (of course, it came with that flip cover....). Not a scratch to be seen on the main screen, but the Graffiti area is worn. Still use it occasionally.

    However, with that said, when my Zire 71 was given to me, they'd left the screen protector the former owner had on it. I left it there, to find it an enormous help- and convenience (don't always have to pull out the stylus anymore; I use my index finger ).
    Do not throw in the towel. Use it for wiping the sweat off your face.

    My device history: (Red means I still have it.)
    Zire (December 2002) --> Zire 71 (September 2006) --> Tungsten E2 (June 2009) --> TX (February 2010) + LifeDrive (March 2011) + iPAQ hx4700 (April 2011) + HTC Magic (32B) (May 2012)

    Other devices, obtained along the way:
    Zire (blue, with Graffiti 2), Zire 21, Zire 31, m500, m125, m130, Zire 72 (two of 'em, one with a damaged battery connector), Palm Treo 650 (Verizon version, worn-out keyboard)
