poor technical support!!
I was a previous palm user. Didn't have any problems. It broke so I bought a new palm. I call technical support 3 times in the last 2 days to reaffirm that I wouldn't lose my data when I installed the software for the new palm. I spoke with Warren, Ryan, and finally Jay (supervisor). Warren insisted that I would not lose my previous data when installing the new software. WELL GUESS WHAT!?!?!?!? ALL OF MY DATA FROM THE LAST 5 YEARS WAS ERASED OFF MY COMPUTER WHEN I INSTALLED THE NEW SOFTWARE. Now the people at palm are saying that they don't guarantee that your data will not be lost!!!
Getting ready to call Corporate to tell them how poor of a job their technical support team is doing. What's worse, they offered no suggestions, just that, "well, your data is lost".
WORD TO THE WISE:
1. Don't call tech support expecting them to be able to help in this type of situation.
2. DON'T BUY PALM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
unhappy user.

If you didn't make a copy of your \Palm\<username>\ directories before you started the install, then surely, during sometime in the last 5 years, you've backed up the data on your PC's hard drive?
I would have expected that, as an experienced Palm owner, you'd be used to making a copy of your data before beginning an install or syncing a new HandHeld.

In addition to seconding Bill's comments, I have to say that I have upgraded/re-installed the desktop software on a number of occassions (on 2 seperate PCs) and not had any problems with data loss.
I doubt there is any fundemental flaw with Palm's upgrade proceedure.

I doubt that technical support didn't told you to Backup first before you re-install the Desktop Software, that's the first advice you get from then everytime you contact their services whatever your problem is. In the other hand, maybe you have a backup folder anywhere? or even an old copy?
Good Luck!
