I can't do a recording, but I can tell you that, IMHO, the recording quality isn't great. You can understand what's being said, but it sounds static-y and muffled. It's usable, but not real high quality.

A bit of advice: take everything you read on a forum with a grain of salt. The answers you get will always be biased and will only really represent the opinion of whoever is responding.

With regards to recording quality: I don't have an LD, but i have seen threads on this question. Some people think quality is spectacular and others think it is terrible, so its best to just go to a store and play with a demo unit.

I have used the record feature on my LifeDrive and on my old T3. If you are in a noisy environment (bar, auditorium, windy conditions) the soud recorded can be quite bad.

If you record in an environment that is not too noisy, don't put your mouth on top of the mic, it is a perfectly acceptable voice recorder. (at least my LD and T3 have both been acceptable for this task).

Usually the tiny condensing mikes on Palms are designed to be used at least 6-12" away from the mouth. Sound quality degrades the closer you get - too close and the soundwaves formed by your voice will be too large for it to cope with successfully. LDLee's advice is good.

I absolutely agree that the LD is usable as a recording device. No question about it.

Yesterday I tested it at 1 inch, 6 inches, 12 inches, and sitting on a table 3 feet away. The good thing is that is sounded the same at each distance. The voice volume was as good when I had it sitting on the table as when I was holding it close. I could understand every word that I said in each test with no problem. I just don't feel that the recording quality is that good. The volume is good, it just isn't crystal clear (and I'm not saying it should be.) On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the best, I'd say it is a 5 or 6. It is actually about what I expected when I bought it.

i have recorded someone tal;king from 20 feet away )albeit in a noise free environment/meeting room). Its not DVD-quality sound, but it is just about intelligible...Close up (2-3feet), it is suprisingly good (even with the damn thing in the Palm hard case...).
