How many "problems" can you pose on one thread?
Hi all,
As some of you may have read on other parts of this forum, I have just got my greedy little paws on 2 Palm PDAs. One is a TX and the other is a Lifedrive. Now, as far as the actual units and accessories (chargers, USB leads etc) are concerned, all seems to be well. The screens are wonderful and the stylus clicks the spot it aims at. No worries there then.
My problems seem to start when I try to add other stuff to the PDAs.
Oh, before I forget, I AM having one slight problem with the sync cable (NOT the power lead). Is there a special trick button that you have to press in to make the lead just drop out of the PDA's base or do you really have to hold the lead in one hand, the PDA in the other and pull them apart with all your might?
OK, what are my other problems?
I have an iGo Stowaway Ultra-slim keyboard (Bluetooth that is proving very difficult. I can make the Lifedrive and the keyboard discoverable. A scan by the Lifedrive picks up the keyboard and the software for the keyboard is already installed on the Palm. I enter a code on both devices as instructed and the screen on the Lifedrive shows a "Trying to connect" type of message followed by a loud beep and "It was impossible to connect" message. I tried three or four times and then gave up until I feel the urge again.
If I have Blazer running and want to use the on-board keyboard to type something in the address bar, how do I get the keyboard to show up? Under any other programme that may need a keyboard, clicking on an icon near the left hand edge of the bottow row of icons brings the keyboard up. If I tap the same icon when Blazer is running, it creates a drop down list of things to do with that particular page. But no option to show a keyboard.
On the same sort of topic, 110529334708 is an auction for a Palm Universal keyboard. Now, "Universal" doesn't always mean "Universal". What it REALLY means is that at the time of going to press and taking into account all the Palm PDAs currently in production, this keyboard works with all of them. It does NOT mean that all PDAs made after that date were backwards compatible with this keyboard. Anyway, I bought one so we shall see if it matches up with the TX or Lifedrive when it arrives chez moi.
That's enough for now I think.
I may sound like a grumpy old sod but truth be told I am actually delighted with both of my new Palm devices.
Take care.
Steve

Re: How many "problems" can you pose on one thread?
Hello Steve,
Congrats on your new devices. Some sync cables have little pressure points on the sides that let you release the sync cable. I believe the TX generally doesn't though, you just pull it straight out.
It will be tight the first few times you use the cable but after a few times it will be smoother and easier.
Hopefully someone else will be able to help with the other questions.David T Kiley

steve_bb2, welcome to Brighthand!
No, Steve, it just happens that the weird connector has not been worn out a bit. You just do it strong_but_gently, and it yields. Eventually
There could be some corrupted preferences in the Bluetooth connections manager. There is this app, called CleanPrefs (<-- click on the word), you install it and it'll kill any of said corrupted preferences, after which you have to do a soft reset.
Hmmm, don't own neither a TX nor a LifeDrive. Better wait till another member replies this one.
What Palm called universal is still subject of intensive debate (
). No, those universal keyboards are no such thing. FWIW, all the Palm Universal Wireless Keyboards, whether IrDA or Bluetooth, work with the LifeDrive. The oldest of all those UWK does not predate the LifeDrive or the TX; pretty much, they all three belong to the same stage of the Palm saga. BTW, there are no more Palm PDAs under current production. As far as it goes, all Palm PDAs are already vintage models (4 in my hands). Back to the UWK, I reckon it will work with both of your Palm devices. If you ask me, I consider it an excellent accessory. It eases input, saves you a lot of wrist wear and a lot of wear in the device's digitizer. And you can wow several of your buddies with more recent yet underfeatured devices

Re: How many "problems" can you pose on one thread?
Are you guys ready for another problem?
Let's clear up some of the old stuff first.
The iGo Bluetooth keyboard has been thrown in the back of a drawer and I got myself that infra red "Universal" keyboard and that works fine. That should also clear up the problem re a keyboard in Blazer.
Thanks for the help with those.
So now we come to today's problem which has to do with synchronising Palm and desktop. The thing is, I am retired so I have no work schedules to keep checking and, the only real updating that needs to be done is phone numbers for friends when they change mobile numbers and stuff like that. So my question is, is there a way to reduce the check/update list during synching?
Thanks guys and guyesses.

Right click on the Hotsync icon in the system tray and choose Custom. In the screen that opens highlite each line in turn, changing the action of the conduit on each resulting screen to Do Nothing, setting as Default by checking the box on each. Leave the ones that you want to sync unchanged. Be certain NOT to change the action of Backup/System (whichever it's called for your device.) Back out of the Custom screen by clicking on Done. That should do it.

Nothing will back up on any of the changed items unless you repeat the process, changing the item's conduit action and setting a new Default.

Re: How many "problems" can you pose on one thread?
DOH!!!
I have been searching every corner of the Lifedrive to find a way to do what I wanted when synching. I never even looked at the Computer to do the job.
Many thanks.
