Will iPAQ 5450 802.11b work with 802.11g routers
I understand that both the standard wifi (802.11b) like the kind bundeled in iPAQ 5450's and 802.11g will both run a 2.4ghz network, my question is, will an iPAQ 5450 using the internal WiFi (802.11b) work on a new 802.11g router!?
Thanks,

It ought to, but only at 11Mbps. It won't run on a 802.11a setup though.Originally posted by The Half-Ling

My iPaq doesn't connect
Hi,
I am using an iPaq 5455 and recently bought a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router. Spent one whole day on it... but the iPaq simply goes "Scanning... Authenticating... Joining..." but never got hooked up to the network... I read something about the cycling problem from some users... but there apparently isn't any solution yet. I am not too sure if they are running 802.11g routers or is it just plain bad luck that I had a bad batch of iPaq...

802.11g is an extension of 802.11b, and is backward compatible.

Well... when i bought the WRT54G, that was what i had in mind. But apparently, from what i am seeing, my ipaq 5455 doesn't wanna connect with it. I read from the HP forums that ppl are having the same problem. Even my Linksys WPC11 version 1.0 PCMCIA Wireless Adaptor doesn't wanna recognise it.. but i am giving it the benefit of the doubt coz' that is really an old wireless adaptor and no one knows what Linksys put in there.
So now, I have a WRT54G which works perfectly fine as a wired router, but i have got totally no idea if it works well as a wireless router. And I have an ipaq which has everything working except for the wireless lan. It does seem like i have to get more hardware in order to fine out if 1.) the wireless router is working, by getting an 802.11g wireless adaptor for my laptop 2.) the ipaq WLAN is working, by getting an 802.11b wireless router. It really sounds stupid, but I will be relocating to another country soon, and it's kinda silly if i bring across everything without acertaining if the thing works. Seesh....
But I would really appreciate if anyone can shine some light on this matter. I will be forever grateful. Thanks.
Rgds,
Angela

Have you contacted Linksys? They tout the WRT54G as compatible with existing 802.11b devices, so something else is going on there.

Yup.. actually, I emailed them, but they are keeping mum about the whole thing. It's like... hush hush... i dun like it. If they can't solve it, why dun they just say so...
I may go get another wireless adaptor for my laptop, to see if the router really works. Else I'll be shipping it back to them.
Seems like it's gonna be a lot of $$$ down the drain... I should have known better when my order was mysteriously cancelled... haha... :P

PS: Oh... just to add on, some of the users in some other forums tried the WRT54G with 802.11b cards, and theirs are working... so, must be something really wrong with mine...

Early adopters pay the price...

I too have the same router, although I am only using it as a WAP...
I had trouble getting my e740 to see it, in fact it wouldn't work at all last night, however my laptop card (Orinico) works just fine.
I know for a fact that anything with a prism2 chipset will not worth with it as it stands now. Not sure what the HP is using, but Linksys will be issuing a firmware update to fix some of these "compatibility" issues at a later date, hopefully sooner than later....
I am hoping they will do so soon as I ditched my e740 in favor of a shiny new 5455!!
I guess its true, once you go iPaq, you can never go back...

Linksys has released new firmware today, one of the fixes is that it increases compatibility with 802.11b devices.... I would upgrade mine if I were you. I updated my router, and it seems that my laptop Orinoco card is working much better and faster.

Hi Hoby,
Thanks a lot for the link.
I downloaded the firmware update... still no luck with my iPaq... gonna try out my good old linksys card to see if it will recognise the router...
