ppc internet access via bluetooth/internet ready cell phone
i was JUST about to invest some $$$ in an all-in-one device (tmobile/sidekick, etc.) when i stumbled upon a few very convincing articles regarding keeping your phone and your ppc separate. well, the convinced me. the author described his chosen solution as purchasing an internet/blue tooth capable phone and a bluetooth capable pda and using the ph's internet connection rather than using one device for mp3/outlook/gps/emial/browsing/ph/vmail etc.
has anyone done this succesfully. i have found that my friendly neighborhood cell phone stores (orlando, fl) are more educated in call plans than they are in real communications solutions using pda's and cell phones.
any suggestions.
i have an ipaq 4150
thanks

I finally did it successfully after some troubleshooting on my bluetooth phone...
I have a 4355 with a T616 Sony Ericsson phone through Cingular. It seems that my friends have had less trouble with the exact same setup but through T-Mobile...anyway, the tech support at Cingular was no help at all, so, luckily after hours of playing with every setting possible, I finally got it right and was able to get them connected and onto my work network. The issue wasn't the bluetooth pairing (that was extremely straightforward) it was dialing the access number to get onto my work's network. I was able to connect to Cingular's network fine, but dialing a different number was where I had to figure it out on my own. The phone would try dialing, then drop the line immediately. It wasn't until I added a new data account on my phone to access a number other than the Cingular one.
But now that everything is working, it is great. I'm connected wherever I go (is that a good thing?).
I hope this long-winded story helps.

That's exactly what I have been trying to do (exceot I have a 4155). Could you please go through the steps and setting required? Also, what do you mean by a seperate data account with Cingular?
Thanks.

It seemed that most of the information I found on the Internet about connecting via bluetooth to a phone and accessing the Internet had to do with Cingular's network, not a different, user supplied network.
I should have been more specific before...and bear with me because I stumbled onto this solution, I'm not sure WHY it works yet.
On my phone, under 'Connect' -> 'Data Comm.' -> 'Data Accounts' there was a list of various data accounts. On mine the list was as follows:
'Express'
'Photo Messaging'
'Home'
'Roam'
I had read in a newsgroup something about needing to add an account other than the ones Cingular supplied, but of course there was no more information given. So I add an account call 'Work'. And here's the part I do not understand....I used an 'APN' of ISP.CINGULAR a 'User ID' of MYCINGULAR.COM and a 'Password' I found (along with these other settings) in a newsgroup. I'm not sure that it makes any difference if it's necessary that you use these exact same settings (I haven't taken the time to test it). You might be able to use the exact same settings from the 'Express' data account. But, nevertheless, whenever I would have my PPC dial my work number, it actually worked.
Now there is probably a better way to do this, but this is how I got it working...I don't understand it...but it's working.
I hope this helps.

I found this thread in a search on T616 and Bluetooth and it almost addresses my issue, almost:
I have a T616 on AT&T wireless. I have an IPAQ 3870. These guys are paired up for BT and they can exchange contact info fine.
I formerly had a T68i and I could access the internet through it, but I cannot figure out what is different about the T616 approach to this. There is a dialing string I used to use with the T68i, from memory it was something like "/99#", but this does not seem to work on the T616.
Could someone who has this setup working point me to some step by step instructions on setting up this arrangement with my AT&T T616 and my 3870?
All input gratefully appreciated!

How to set up T616 to 3870 on AT&T
The info posted describes a proceedure for connecting to Cingular. I do not think that the AT&T network is yet that integrated that those "Cingular" ID's and Passwords will work with an WT&T M-mode account, or will it?
Has anyone posted similar step by step for an AT&T connection?

Re: ppc internet access via bluetooth/internet ready cell phone
Jonmical, I live in DeBary, about 20 miles from Orlando, and I'm having great success using an AT&T (now Cingular, I think) Sony Ericsson T616 phone with both an H4150 and an H5450. I was surprised and pleased to find that Florida has about the best overall GSM/GPRS coverage in the USA right now.Originally posted by jonmical

Take a look at the AT&T Build a Solution page. Click "yes" on this page, choose your phone from the next page, then choose your PDA from the following page. Great instructions that worked perfectly the first time for me!Originally posted by cjhinpa

After months of using the h4155 with SE T-610 on T-Mobile, which worked pretty well, I just traded my T-610 (after three units failed) for the new Nokia 6600. The 6600 is superior, albeit larger, than my T-610 was. The BT connection is more reliable and easier to configure, and seems a little faster.
I am a former Treo followed by T-Mo MDA (xda) user, and I much prefer keeping separate devices for many reasons.
