    Question

My work just upgraded my laptop to Windows 2000, so I started using my USB sync cradle, now i can't seem to keep my device connected, and it doesn't recognize it all the time. Is this a common problem? If so is it the USB or Win 2000? Any fixes? I can always go back to Serial, but USB seems pretty fast (when I can get it working).

    Thanks,

    James

I haven't had any issues with my Win2K machine and Activesync. I have noticed that my iPAQ cradle doesn't have any rear support and this sometimes causes it to lean back far enough due to it's own weight and get disconnected from activesync. Usually I jiggle forward a but and it reconnects.

I've used USB and Win2k (with the new USB driver from Compaq) with all three of my Ipaqs (why three? - the dust issue of course - see separate thread), and it worked flawlessly until I did a rebuilt my desktop last week. After I did that I was getting flaky connections between Activesync and the Ipaq - it'd drop the connection intermittently. I messed with it for quite a while then got desperate and used the Activesync troubleshooter on Microsoft.com. I can't remember specifically which step it was in there that resolved it (I remember it included turning Activesync off, undocking the Ipaq, resetting it etc.) but whatever it was got things back on track - you might want to try stepping through the troubleshooter yourself...

I am running W2K/USB ActiveSync as well with fairly good results. I have heard of some ActiveSync issues with a USB hub, but that is probably not an issue for your laptop.

In case you haven't checked yet. The version of AS that came on my CD was out of date. Make sure you have the latest version. On the old version I would have some problems and then after "soft" booting it would connect again. Since I upgraded AS to the latest version my connects just about every time unless the IPaq settles backwards and then I just "re-seat" it and it connects.

I am using the CD version of AS. Maybe I will try and upgrade, and then work from there. Thanks

    Default USB win2k synch

...have NEVER been able to USB synch a 1.28, 1.69, or 1.77 ROM iPaq with win2k SP1 or SP2...

serial synching works ok, but slowly (38.4bps max workable speed)

    hw:
    1GHz Athlon Thunderbird
Abit KT7-RAID mb (latest win2k drivers)
VIA KT133 chipset (latest win2k drivers)
    WD40GB 7200RPM hd
    256M PC133 SDRAM
    Geforce 2MX(32M Jaton)
    USB mouse
    PS2 keyboard

    symptoms:
    active synch hangs
    USB mouse fails

    correction:
reboot only reliable cure to restore mouse operation

    corrective action tries:
    various iPaq ROMs
    various win2k hotfixes & sps
    re-installs of activesynch

    conclusion:
    MS flakey hw support

    why?:
    E-125 active synch USB works
    USB mice work(mostly)
    Palm device USB synchs work(mostly)
CDRW flakes out mor eoften than not...
    USB hd support randomly fails
faults repeatable on intel & other chipset mbs under MS win98 & win2k, but not under linux for supported devices on same systems...

    Mac OS (8.x - 9.x):
    Palm USB synchs work
every other USB device works (drives, mice, scanners, etc. ad nauseum)
