Kodak Professional DCS Pro Back is the highest resolution one-shot digital camera in the world with superb image quality and excellent color editing capability. It is ideal for studio but can be used as portable photography as well with sophisticated digital controls. The uncompressed file size can be as large as 48MB for 8 bits per color RGB TIFF to 128MB for 16 bits per color CMYK TIFF. Pretec's 640MB CF card provides needed capacity for super high-resolution cameras such as Pro Back, yet maintains the excellent reliability due to flash memory devices compared with rotating magnetic media. ``We are glad to see that Pretec offers the low power and reliable alternative flash storage solution for Kodak Professional digital camera users,'' said Madhav Mehra, Worldwide Product Business Manager, Photographer Capture Products and Systems, Kodak Professional. ``The dual CF slots of Pro Back can provide unprecedented 1.2GB ultra-reliable storage using Pretec 640MB CF card.''

Relax, Boxster. It's only been 5 hours.

My two big concerns with this, and the reason I've held off, are (a) it's gonna cost $$$ like you can't believe; and (b) availability will be limited for a while.

I'm gonna stick with my 1GB MD for a while

ATA-Flash is not the same as CompactFlash.
Viking is coming out with a 1GB ATA-Flash Card, not CompactFlash.
Anyway, Sandisk already has a 1.2GB ATA-Flash Card that's out and costs $3,000+.

As for the Kodak+Pretec 640MB CF Card, I'm sure if you had the money to buy the camera, you'll have enough to buy the CF card.

You know, every time I think the price of RAM for these portable devices is going to come down, I'm disappointed to find otherwise.

Granted, the price of the 128MB and 256MB CF cards are down drastically from what they were (I paid $650 for my 256MB CF card last year this time), but come on!

I've been waiting for the prices of the larger solid-state cards to come down -like the 800MB ATA cards- but they don't budge. I've got the money to spend, but I can't bring myself to give in to these companies' price gouging!

If I'm totally clueless on this, someone please set me straight; I'm never too proud to learn something new.

I might buy one next year at $0.50/MB.

Or maybe by then a 640 MB cf card might go for $200.00.

That would be sweet (and inevitable).
