Seeing the thread on the picturebook laptop got me thinking. They look cool but I just wouldn't need one (especially with the horrible battery life). I sold my laptop and the iPAQ IS my replacement. I don't have any needs that can't be met with the iPAQ as far as a portable PC. Of course it will be even more so when I recieve the stowaway keyboard...So what about you guys? Do you make your iPAQ jealous by still using a laptop?

I am selling my notebooks now!
I travel alot (by car) and used a notebook for GPS navigation and Internet.
Well, i have the gps/mapping for the ipaq, i have sierra wireless for inet access, I have a keyboard (Ibiz).
So, my notebook has been sitting around for the last 6 months gathering dust.
I really believe in the next 5 years IPAQ type devices will totally replace notebooks.
The one thing i WISH compaq did was make the screen just a little bigger (so a web page would fit properly). I think they would just have to make it maybe 1/2 inch wider and it would be perfect.
Other than that, i will not replace my ipaq with the newer version (64meg), what would make be buy another one is a slightly bigger screen.
I also have JS landscape, so i can run in landscape, but there is no really easy way to HOLD an ipaq when its sideways (not to mention when using the keyboard, and having it in its serial cradel, you cant use landscape)

I wrote an article on PocketPC.com about this:

BTW: I don't really call my laptop "portable computer." It's a Microsoft thing...

I certainly delayed/cancelled a purchase of a laptop due to my iPAQ. Kinda funny (well, in a perverted sense) that I've paid more on the iPAQ and accesories than a laptop.
iPAQ, PCcard sleeve, Silver Slider, 3 cases, auto adapter, various battery packs, 2Gb Kingston DataPak, ethernet, modem, 2 64Mb CF cards... shoot me now.

Actualy, i spent alot on mine too, however i lucked out.
The company i USE to work for paid for it all, and when i left, part of my seperation package was to keep it!.
so i have IPAQ, Sierra wireless card, PC sleeve, 2 CF sleeves, Ethernet, modem, Nokia phone interface, Serial CF card, GPS package, IBIZ keyboard, Serial cradle, and a ton of software.
I dont think they realize how much THEY spent on this ;-)
BTW, im selling the 2 CF sleeves if anyones interested, dont need them anymore with the PC sleeve.

Well, in a sense, my laptop replaced my iPAQ. I purchased the iPAQ first, and it goes everywhere with me. I don't have the need for a laptop that travels with me in general, so the iPAQ is more than sufficient. However, I also installed a wireless lan at home recently. My initial intention was to purchase a PC Card Sleeve and a Wireless Lan card so that I could access the internet anywhere in the house via my iPAQ. However, the PC Card availability was delayed so long that I ended up getting a laptop in the mean time (this wasn't the sole reason for my purchase of a laptop). Now that I have the laptop with the Wireless Lan PC card, I no longer see the need for a bulky PC Card Sleeve for my iPAQ. When I'm out and about, the iPAQ is still King, but when I'm at home, I use the laptop to surf the web. My poor Desktop system in the basement rarely gets any attention at all anymore.

I would dump my laptop except for 2 reasons: I need to use AutoCAD, occasionally, when I am away from my desktop and I am not happy yet with the Pocket PC GPS software. It doesn't have all of the features I need for my work. Even at that, I will only need the laptop several times a year. It does gather dust.

The killer for guys like me is the inability to run powerpoint on the PocketPC platform. It is the only missing thing otherwise, laptop would never be needed.

I have used the iPAQ and my Jornada 548 on all of my business trips since July. The Jornada only goes on trips where keyboards are necessary. That will change in a few weeks. I also use the machine on days when I know I wont be in the office all day and need a light load. I love these machines
byancey, I have the exact same story. I use a small Sony Vaio and my cisco aironet card at home. Decided against a sleeve due to availability.
