Hi all,
Does anyone out there know how to connect God's gift to the computer addicted (IPAQ) to the Internet using the standard serial modems we use for accessing the Internet with desktop PCs.
I am not interested in using IPAQ with a mobile phone - access charges here in Australia are way too high. Main use away from home would be using standard telephone connections, eg at the office or in hotels.
I currently have a CF expansion pack.
I asked our local COMPAQ dealer and the poor soul has gone away to research but I don't hold out much hope. IPAQs are rare in Australia and cost a bundle so the local COMPAQ staff don't have any to experiment on.
Thanks

There are sevaral conventional way to hookup your iPAQ to using a modem. You can use the iPAQ serial cable to connect to the modem, but unless you have one already it is not cost effective to buy a cable just for this purpose.
You could also buy a pretec CF modem or one like it if you happen to have a CF sleeve. I have one but chose a different route.
I bought a travel modem from psion and I think diamond multimedia now has the same one available for the mako by the same I mean exactly except for the name. It is an IR modem cost around $129.00US. I chose this route because I can use my CF memory as storage when I'm surfing and mainly to store pages for Avantgo. I also use it to store other info like flight data and email attachments. This is what works for me. There are other IR modems available. but most of them cost more than the psion model.

Hi Mikten,
I'm also in Oz and wondering the same thing. I have played with a friends Nokia 8210 (I think that was the model) with the built in IR modem, but like you aluded to, Telstra charge like a wounded bull.
I'll try the serial cable trick out this afternoon, as I have one at work.
Anyone know how I can combine the emails I download via the iPAQ into the emails I sync with my comp?

Ok I tried the serial cable to modem thing and I can't get it to work.
Here's my setup:
Banksia 56k Wave modem -> Serial gender bender -> iPAQ serial sync cable -> iPAQ.
There are only two modem choices in the iPAQ:
Generic IrDA modem
Hayes Compatible on COM1
Obviously I choose the Hayes one.
So far no response from the modem.
Anyone had any luck with this ??

I haven't tried this with my Ipaq yet (I have a CF modem that works really well) but the instructions on the following page should work. They worked fine for my old Casio E105.

Good luck!

Ahhh of course, I hadn't included the null modem cable. Stupid me

Maybe tomorrow I'll get it working.
Thanks Vlado.
