Just got pretec cf modem, worksgreat appears to be compaq version just 50.00 cheaper. Got it at mobileplanet.com.

I have one also. Absolutely no problems with it. I wonder if there are any technical differences between the Pretec and the Compaq to warrant such a price difference.

any use a pretec to fax? what do you need?

Nothing more than the Modem AND a faxing program, such a B-Fax Pro 5.0, which you can buy from B-Square and is worth the cost if you intend to do a lot of fax send/receive.

Actually as of Jan 1 2001 bSquare no longer sells their CE apps to the public (enterprise customers only). They say that you will have the software pre-installed on future devices (new version of Pocket PC OS maybe?).

Support will be discontinued on March 1 2001.

Grrr! I ignorantly got the Compaq 56k modem, paying the higher price. Wonder whether the Pretec and Compaq modems are white brands made at a single factory, just with different labels stuck on...(I don't mean to be rude, but the thought did occur to me

Actually U might be right, Spoke with my brother who works at compaq and he believes they are both the same, He said they do buy product from protec.
