    Question

Hello, I just recieved a new replacment iPAQ for my November built unit and I wanted to see want people are seeing different between the C or December built variety and the B variety. The replacment had a silver finish that is not quite as bright and the screen seems to have a very slight reddish tint, the buttons do protude out a little further and the stylus sticks out just a little bit, I guess the best thing is no dust. Thanks for your imput.

When did you purchase the (defective) November unit? Thanks.

There won't necessarily be any differences at all. The B just means it was built in November, the C in December. The number/letter in that position will change every month, regardless of whether any changes are made in the design/engineering of the iPaq.

The November unit was sent to replace one that was purchased in July, that one had a digitizer problem.

I just received my ipaq replacement through Carepaq (24 hours from the call to delivery at my door). It is a "C" which replaces my "A" model. There is only one difference, that being the door fix. Thee is still an opening in the stylus hole. No dust so far and I intend to keep the stylus in the silo to help avoid any dust. I do not yet know about the digitilizer.

I bought a Palm Vx also. It is a nice size, but there is no comparison. Compaq has a winner if they can just fix the current quality problems.

I should thank Compaq Service for the quick turnaround. I do hope they fix the the problems nonetheless.

I had the opportunity to use both a B and C iPAQ, and I can tell you that there doesn't seem to be any difference at all. Both have the sliding door fix, both have the stylus-in-backward fix. Oddly, I was sent the C unit as being "dust fixed" as well, but it is still open to the screen through the stylus hole. What I'm hearing from Dale Coffing is that Compaq is thinking the "dust" is really glass particles from the manufacturing process, and that they are now using a different technique for the screens and feel that dust will not be a problem in them. Let's hope the dust is gone for good. I also feel that both the B and C units had screens with ever so slightly better contrast (I can actually see what day of the week is selected in the alarm settings).

I too noticed a slightly reddish tinge to my C series iPAQ. Once I got it away from my 7 series I couldn't tell but it was definitely noticeable when they are side by side.

As soon as I opened my brand new ('C') iPaq yesterday, I noticed some dust. By the end of the day, more dust was visible (especially if you play PocketTV in landscape mode). I called Compaq and they said that the dust issue is different than the particles one. They suggested a new replacement, but then I said" this is the newest production already...". Their answer was astounding: "well Sir, usually users send us their units for dust cleaning every other month, so we suggest you get the CarePaq". They don't even know if this problem wil be fixed.
So guess what: I returned it to the store and got my money back.
I think the iPaq technology is terrific, but there are huge design flaws. I'll get the Casio EM-505 (same as EM-500 but with 32MB RAM) from France instead.
