Default Apple Products on the Big and Little Screens

Apple products appeared in an amazing number of TV shows and movies last year:

Apple has spent decades strengthening its subtle but powerful grip over Hollywood, and unlike many companies, says it never pays for its products to appear on television or in movies. The company’s gadgets were discussed or shown 891 times on TV in 2011, up from 613 in 2009, according to researcher Nielsen (NLSN). In the same year, iDevices appeared in more than 40 percent of the movies that topped the weekly box office, according to Brandchannel, which tracks product appearances. That’s nearly twice the penetration of the next most common brands in Hollywood—Dell (DELL), Chevy (GM), and Ford (F).

I read in another article a month or so ago that movies and TV often use product placement as a quick way to establish a character's personality. So, for example, they show someone using a Mac or iPad to show they are hip. And, I'm not kidding about this, if they want to establish that a guy is a rich jerk, they'll put him in a Porsche.

I can't wait for the Apple TV (the real actual TV screen). I need a new TV and I hope it's a good one. Unfortunately, it probably won't be a plasma screen, which I prefer.

I have no stats; but usually the 'rich bad guy car' was the Mercedes SL of various generations. Of course JR Ewing drove an Mercedes S-class and Bobby drove the SL. Porsches are much less common because they are harder to come by and more expensive and Porsche wasn't as big in the game of supplying free cars. One of the great Porsche appearances though was in Bachelor Party (Tom Hanks). The villain drove the 911.

What's the one (and only) thing that Ana from Fifty Shades of Grey and Lizbeth Salander from The Girl Who... trilogy has in common? A MacBook Pro 17. It's become a bit of a cliche honestly.

Actually, Salander spends as much time with her T3 as anything else. In fact, it is pretty much her only computer in the third book.

In Independence Day, I don't think they could have brought down those alien spaceships using an HP laptop. Just sayin'

I can picture the dialog now...

"But the missile is about to explode!"

"Yeah, but the computer says it isn't ready to shut down. Just a few more minutes. No. Wait. Explorer isn't responding. Maybe if I hold in the power switch."

(On the screen the time can be seen going 9...8...7...6...5...4)

"Oh the heck with it! I'll just pull the battery! Let's go..."

    (3...2...1)

(Sad music is heard as the heros failed to get clear of the alien craft in time, thanks to Bill Gates)

There's a gal I know well, who reminds me of Salander sooooo much. Well, without the violence that is. (yes, she has tattoos, and yes, she has a boot camp body). She was my administrator in the server farms we used to own. I sold the biz to her. She was the first person I knew with a Palm. She still has it, and a dumb phone. I ask her why she doesn't get an android, or an iPhone, and she starts talking about her palm.....and her netbook with ubuntu, and then her 17 inch macbook pro, etc etc. She loves that old palm. Actually, IMHO, she should get an android, or jailbreak an iPhone. Pic attached, of us teaching her to saltwater flyfish.

The television series 'House' has a ton of Apple placement, as it's one of the few programs I buy [dvd sets] I'm gobsmacked by how much there is....no one's Macbook Pro is ever plugged in either
