Red face Upgrading to a new iPhone Q

I got my PIM start with the Palm Vx, and later the Palm Tx...

The beauty of upgrading or changing Palms was the predictability - buy a new one, sync it, everything that was there is still there...

The iPhone is so enigmatic because it only has iTunes as a manager. No desktop app for PIM management (at least for Windows).

What the heck happens when you get a new or different iPhone?

Can you restore a backup of your old phone to the new one? If so, what comes over to the new phone? What is lost?

I should note that I do not sync contacts to either Outlook (do not use on my personal PC), nor do I sync to Apples Cloud...

    Thanks!

    Absolute bandwidth corrupts absolutely...

When I went from iPhone 3Gs to iPhone 4, I performed a backup of the old iPhone on iTunes to make sure that everything in the backup was current. Then I plugged the new iPhone 4 into iTunes and restored everything into the new iPhone. I forget what the exact prompts are but the process definitely walks you thru the steps and it takes a while but in the end everything was in my new iPhone except some photos that I had Bumped from my iPad (because iTunes didn't know where to find them.) I just Bumped them into the new iPhone and that was that.

I later restored my iPhone 3Gs to factory settings and set it up on my son's PC so the could have that iPhone.

It's not difficult to do but there may some small adjustments to make afterward. I think that some of my album art was missing but it wasn't hard to fix.

I also don't use Outlook or the iCloud. I don't sync my calendars anywhere. If I need to get an appointment or Contact on both my iPhone and iPad, I create the item on one device and Bump it onto the other. Works like a charm.

Possibly a dumb question but what do you mean by "Bump it onto the other"? Do you mean sync with iTunes?

There is an app called "bump" that allows data to be shared from two adjacent devices wirelessly probably via wifi or bluetooth.

One thing that should be mentioned here is that iTunes sync is the "old fashioned" way to sync iOS data. iCloud works quite well. I own a Mac so iCloud pushes data between my Mac, my iPhone and my iPad. I've heard iCloud also works for Windows users but I haven't tried it. If you set your device to back up to iCloud, it only does it when it is plugged in and charging and on the lock screen. Yesterday my iPad warned me it hadn't been backed up in two weeks. That's how long I get on a charge these days and while I don't use it as much as I used to, I use my iPad almost daily.

Yep, that's the Bump that I meant; uses Wifi. Works like a charm; I use it a lot.

Thanks for the explanation about "Bump". I'll have to take a look at it.

I believe an improved Bump 3.0 just came out. Does it exist for Android?

There is a new version of Bump for iPhone available today. I haven't downloaded it yet because I'm waiting to read the early upgrade reviews.

Bump is available for Android, too. Additionally, from the website FAQs:
    Q. Cool, but doesn't this only work between two iPhones?

    A. No! Bump currently supports iPhone, iPod, iPad, and Android, and works cross-platform between them all.

    Q. Wait, you are saying an Android phone can bump an iPhone?

    A. You bet. Any two devices running Bump can bump each other.
    Website is here for both.

Very cool. Thanks. Let us know if you find the 3.0 version to be an improvement. (If you get a chance.)

Definitely NOT upgrading to V.3.0. The upgrade drops out the ability to bump Calendar events, a feature that I use several times a week in order to keep the same appointments/entries on my iPhone and iPad. Essentially, the items still able to 'bump" are Photos, Contacts, and social networking stuff. I'm so glad that I always read the reviews/opinions of the early upgraders because this time they are all furious, calling the upgrade a definite "downgrade".

Ugh. I'm sitting this one out.
